SWINDON IT EXPERT LEE ADAMS JAILED FOR NEARLY 100,000 CHILD PORN IMAGES AND SHARING ONLINE
In December 2004, a disturbing case emerged involving Lee Adams, a computer specialist from Swindon, who was convicted of possessing an alarming quantity of child pornography. The authorities uncovered that Adams had amassed nearly 100,000 indecent images and videos depicting children on his personal computers, some of which he had also shared with other internet users.
Adams, aged 35 at the time, was apprehended after the Metropolitan Police received a tip-off about an individual known by the alias 'Nitpicker' engaging in file sharing on an internet platform.
An officer investigating the case accessed the file-sharing service and discovered numerous files with titles indicating they contained child abuse material, including terms like 'pre-teen' and '10-year-old.' Following this lead, police executed a search warrant at Adams' residence in Alpine Close, Shaw, Swindon.
The raid uncovered a significant collection of electronic devices, including 13 desktop computers, three laptops, six hard drives, and various other pieces of equipment.
The confiscated devices revealed a staggering 93,349 images and films of child pornography.
While nearly 60,000 images were stored directly on the computers, the remaining files had been downloaded and left traces across the devices.
Further investigation into Adams' file-sharing activities uncovered more than 200 indecent images of children available for download by other users.
This indicated that Adams was not only in possession of such material but was also actively distributing it via the internet.
During police questioning, Adams claimed that his primary interests were in watching episodes of Star Trek and the American sitcom Friends, and he also admitted to viewing adult pornography.
The court was informed that some of the files he possessed included episodes of these TV shows, which he had made available for others to download.
In May of the previous year, Adams pleaded guilty to 19 counts of possessing child pornography.
Initially, he denied any involvement in the distribution of the material, asserting that he was unaware that others could download files from his devices.
However, earlier in the year, he changed his stance and admitted to the charge of distribution.
Prosecutor Mark Worsley highlighted Adams' professional background, noting that he was an IT expert working for a computer manufacturing company, providing advice to customers, and was a certified Microsoft engineer.
Despite his technical expertise, Adams' actions had serious legal consequences.
His defense attorney, Claire Marlowe, acknowledged the severity of the offenses but emphasized Adams' troubled mental health history.
She referenced psychiatric reports indicating that Adams was a lonely and isolated individual, who had attempted suicide at age 12 and had previously tried to set his house on fire.
Marlowe explained that Adams currently resides with his parents and has been unemployed since his arrest.
Judge Charles Wade sentenced Adams to two years in prison, expressing concern over the risk of re-offending.
The judge remarked that Adams had maintained an obsessive interest in such depraved material over several years, using it to feed his sexual fantasies.
The judge described the material as 'of the most depraved and perverted kind.' In addition to the custodial sentence, Adams' license was extended by three years upon release.
He was also subject to a sexual offences prevention order, which prohibited him from approaching children, using the internet to access chat rooms, exchange files, or visit pornography sites.
Furthermore, Adams was ordered to register as a sex offender, forfeit his hard drives, and was barred from working with children in any capacity.
