LAWRENCE SIMMS FROM PLYMOUTH CAUGHT IN STOKE-ON-TRENT PAEDOPHILE HUNTER STING

In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing threat of online grooming and child exploitation, Lawrence Simms, a 54-year-old man from Plymouth, was caught in a sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters in Stoke-on-Trent.

The incident unfolded on March 21, 2020, when Simms traveled approximately 250 miles from his home in Plymouth to the Potteries area, with the apparent intention of meeting a 14-year-old girl he believed he had been communicating with online.

Simms was observed arriving outside the H Samuel jewellers in Hanley, near the Potteries Centre, wearing a cap and carrying a backpack.

He was confronted by members of the paedophile hunting group known as The Unknown, who had set up a live-streamed operation to catch individuals attempting to meet minors for sexual purposes.

The footage captured during this confrontation was later handed over to the police to aid in the prosecution of Simms.

The video, which lasted approximately 27 minutes, begins with the hunters arriving at the scene and immediately engaging Simms in questioning.

Initially, he appears defiant, denying any wrongdoing.

A male member of the group informs him that he is under arrest for online grooming and attempting to meet a child.

The group then questions Simms about his intentions, especially regarding the hotel room he had booked for what he claimed was a solo stay.

During the confrontation, Simms insists, “I booked the room for me, for one person.

Me.” Despite his claims, the group points out inconsistencies, including his travel from Plymouth and the fact that he believed he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl.

The group’s female member confronts him about his online chats, accusing him of grooming the girl over the course of about a month and asking inappropriate questions about her clothing and body.

Throughout the footage, members of the group and bystanders can be heard expressing disgust and anger.

One person repeatedly shouts, “Dirty b*****,” while the female hunter condemns Simms’ actions, stating, “This is what happens unfortunately when you mess around with children online.

Do you understand?

You asked her to take pictures in her swimwear.

Why would you want to do that?

It’s not a mistake, is it?

You’ve been grooming her now for quite a while, haven’t you?

For about a month, I believe.” She further accuses him of calling the girl “cutie” and questions his intentions, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.

Simms, who claims he cannot remember how many children he has spoken to but later admits it is “no more than five,” is pressed about his sexual attraction to minors.

He responds, “Not really,” but becomes increasingly agitated, arguing that he booked the hotel for himself and that he had doubts about meeting the girl.

When challenged about his travel plans, Simms insists he has not been near the hotel and claims ignorance of its location.

The group’s male member counters, “You traveled seven hours on a coach.

You could have got off when the coach changed.

That was the last chance to change your mind.

You’re here now to meet her where you arranged to.

You’re claiming it was just some big innocent thing you were going to walk away from when you traveled seven hours across the country.

You booked two or three weeks ago.

This isn’t something that has happened this morning, and now you’re going to change your mind this afternoon.

You have groomed this girl day after day.

When were you going to change your mind?” After nearly thirty minutes of confrontation, police officers from Staffordshire Police arrive on the scene.

Simms is then detained and escorted into a patrol vehicle, ending the live stream.

A crowd that had gathered nearby can be heard clapping and jeering, with some shouting “dirty.” Following his arrest, Lawrence Simms appeared in Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to two charges: attempting to engage a child in sexual communication and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

The court sentenced him to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, for the first offence.

Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for ten years and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for the same duration.

During the sentencing hearing, Paul Cliff, representing Simms, described him as an isolated individual living alone in a one-bedroom flat.

He acknowledged that the incident had caused distress within Simms’ family, noting that it had been a difficult 14 to 15 months for him.

The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing efforts to protect children from online predators.
