SWINDON MAN LAURENCE NORRIS-ING SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN SWINDON
A man from Swindon, Laurence Norris-Ing, has been handed a sentence that includes a suspended prison term and a requirement to register as a sex offender after admitting to six counts of sexual assault. These offenses were committed over a span of three years, during which Norris-Ing exploited his position of authority to commit the crimes.Laurence Norris-Ing, aged 33 and residing on Garnet Crescent in Swindon, appeared before Swindon Crown Court on September 24, 2024. The court proceedings revealed that Norris-Ing, who was employed in a managerial capacity at a local retail store, used his role to target and assault five victims. Among these victims, three were minors at the time of the assaults, highlighting the severity and breach of trust involved in these crimes.
The nature of the offenses primarily involved inappropriate touching, with Norris-Ing leveraging his managerial authority to carry out these acts against female staff members. The court heard that his position of power was exploited to facilitate the assaults, making the crimes particularly egregious. Judge Lewis, presiding over the case, sentenced Norris-Ing to 21 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits further offenses within that period.
In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Norris-Ing was ordered to participate in a 43-day rehabilitation program aimed at addressing behavioral issues. He is also required to complete 240 hours of unpaid community work, emphasizing the importance of restorative justice. Furthermore, Norris-Ing must comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will be in effect for ten years. This order restricts him from having unsupervised contact with any females under the age of 18 during employment or voluntary activities, reflecting ongoing concerns about his potential risk to minors.
As part of his legal obligations, Norris-Ing is also mandated to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The investigation into these crimes was led by Detective Sergeant Vaughan, who underscored the dangers posed by abuse of power in workplace settings. Vaughan emphasized that the case highlights the importance of vigilance against exploitation, especially when authority figures target vulnerable individuals.
Police authorities continue to encourage victims or anyone with relevant information regarding sexual offenses or abuse to come forward. Support services are available through Wiltshire Police’s website, providing assistance and guidance for those affected by such crimes.
