BRISTOL OFFICIAL LAURENCE KNIGHT SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX PLOT IN BRISTOL
In March 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Laurence Knight, a senior public health official from Bristol, who was convicted of plotting to commit heinous acts involving two young girls.Knight, aged 51 at the time, had engaged in clandestine online communications with undercover police officers posing as parents, with the explicit intent of arranging a meeting to carry out sexual abuse against the children, aged 8 and 10.
During the investigation, Knight expressed disturbing thoughts about having 'serious and horrible' sex with the girls while his wife was away in the Middle East.
He used a secret 'cheat' phone—an additional device he kept for meeting women on adult dating sites—to coordinate his plans.
His conversations with the undercover officers, who went by the aliases 'Baz' and 'Michelle,' revealed his detailed intentions to meet and sexually assault the girls, including discussions about babysitting and his inability to control himself once with them.
Authorities arrested Knight in Bristol last March after he discussed his plans to babysit another girl and admitted that he might not be able to control his impulses.
At the time of his arrest, Knight was serving as the regional deputy director of communications for Public Health England, a government agency under the Department of Health.
He has since left his position, but his role at the time underscored the severity of his misconduct.
Despite his claims that his actions were merely 'fantasy' and that he never intended to follow through, the court found him guilty of attempting to arrange or facilitate a child sex offence.
Prosecutor Robert Davies emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, 'You are looking at top line offending, that is what was planned and in the context of two children and three adults.' Further details revealed during the trial included a transcript of Knight's email exchanges with 'Baz,' in which he asked provocative questions such as, 'Have you licked them while they sleep?' and described his own disturbing behavior, including letting his hands wander over a girl while she slept after consuming Dutch courage.
Knight also expressed eagerness to 'play games' and to feel the girls crawling all over him.
Defense attorney Kate Brunner argued that there was no concrete evidence that Knight had acted with paedophilic intent, pointing out that although there was talk about events involving children, no actual contact or contact attempts had been made.
She also noted that a thorough search of Knight's computers yielded no evidence of contact with children or attempts to do so, and that Knight was considering seeking private therapy while in prison.
It was also revealed that Knight had a pornography obsession, frequently searching for material related to 'bestiality,' 'incest,' and 'teens.' His career in public health spanned several years, beginning in 2003 when he became the south west regional communications manager for the Health Protection Agency.
He served as its public spokesperson and continued in this role when the agency was absorbed into Public Health England in 2013.
Knight's personal life was also discussed, including his marriage since 2003, which had become strained over time.
He attributed his deviant fantasies to communication breakdowns and a diminished sex life with his wife.
Despite his conviction, Knight maintained that he was still with his wife, who was not present at the sentencing.
Ultimately, Laurence Knight was sentenced to four years in prison.
The court also imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and ordered him to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
It is likely that he will serve half of his sentence on license, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the potential risk to the community.
