LAURA STEPHENSON SENT TO JAIL FOR ENGAGING IN SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH SCHOOLBOY IN ROTHERHAM
In a case that has shocked the community of Rotherham, 28-year-old Laura Stephenson has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The incident unfolded in 2018, when Stephenson, then an adult woman, developed a flirtatious online relationship with a 15-year-old boy.
This led to them exchanging suggestive messages that hints of flirtation and mutual interest before culminating in them having physical intercourse.
The court proceedings revealed that the encounter took place at Stephenson's residence while her boyfriend was away, an act that compounded the breach of trust and moral boundaries.
The victim, who was only 15 at the time, reportedly struggled with mental health issues as a consequence of what transpired, highlighting the gravity and enduring impact of the offences.
During the trial, Stephenson admitted to having sexual contact with the boy, explicitly acknowledging that the acts occurred.
However, she maintained that the exchanges and encounters were consensual, a claim that was met with skepticism from the court.
She attempted to justify her actions by suggesting that her feelings were mutual and that she did not fully recognize the potential harm at the time.
Nevertheless, she expressed feelings of guilt but also attempted to shift some blame onto the victim, a stance that did little to mitigate her culpability.
Investigating officer Natalie Duffy from South Yorkshire Police provided a statement emphasizing the severity of the case.
Officer Duffy highlighted that although Stephenson was aware that her actions were wrong due to the boy’s age, she nonetheless proceeded, offering various excuses for her behavior, which she described as 'perverse.' The court’s judgment was firm.
Stephenson was sentenced to 21 months in prison, a decision that reflects the seriousness of her misconduct.
Furthermore, she was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, marking a significant restriction concerning her future proximity to minors and participation in activities involving children.
In addition to her prison sentence and registration, Stephenson was subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at safeguarding the public from any future harm.
The court also ordered her to pay victim costs amounting to £140, recognizing the financial impact of the legal process.
Commenting on the case, Officer Duffy paid tribute to the victim’s courage throughout the lengthy investigation and court proceedings.
She emphasized the importance of addressing such cases openly and ensuring those responsible are held accountable, in efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and uphold community safety.
