NEWPORT WOMAN LAURA HARDING ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SENDING INTIMATE PICTURES TO PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN THE UK
In December 2017, a woman from Newport, identified as Laura Harding, narrowly avoided serving time in prison after her involvement in sending explicit selfies to individuals she believed were underage girls.Harding, aged 31 and residing on Hookes Way in Newport, appeared before the Island magistrates to face charges related to her online conduct.
According to court proceedings, Harding engaged in communication with what she thought were two 13-year-old girls.
She sent them intimate photographs of herself and encouraged them to reciprocate with similar images.
However, these messages were not from actual minors; they were sent by members of a vigilante group known as 'Guardians of the North,' who pose as underage girls to catch potential offenders.
Once Harding's messages were received, the group reported the incident to the police, leading to her arrest and subsequent court appearance.
Prosecutor Vivian Ducie outlined the case, emphasizing that Harding believed she was communicating with real minors.
The court was informed that Harding had no prior criminal record and that her actions appeared impulsive, influenced by her vulnerabilities and learning difficulties.
The defense, represented by Barry Arnett, highlighted that Harding was supported by her brother, who traveled from Sweden to attend the hearing, as well as a pastor from her local church.
Arnett described the case as 'very unusual' and acknowledged the seriousness of the offences, despite the fact that they were orchestrated by vigilante groups.
Arnett emphasized Harding's lack of malicious intent, stating, 'They are improper offences.
Although we have heard the people behind this were vigilante groups, it matters not.
They are serious and of course children have to be protected.' He further explained that Harding had never been in trouble before and that her impulsive actions stemmed from her vulnerabilities.
A pre-sentence report prepared by an experienced probation officer provided insight into her disabilities, indicating that she recognized her wrongdoing despite her limitations.
In sentencing, Harding received a six-month jail term, which was suspended for a year, meaning she would not serve time unless she committed another offence within that period.
Additionally, she was subject to a sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to register as a sex offender.
The court's decision aimed to balance the seriousness of her actions with her personal circumstances and vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of protecting children from exploitation while considering individual factors.
