KYRON BURGESS FROM NEWPORT STRIKES AGAIN WITH ROBBERY AND HARASSMENT NEAR BLACK LIVES MATTER MARCH

In a disturbing series of criminal acts, Kyron Burgess, a man with a troubling past from Newport, has once again found himself behind bars after committing a violent robbery and persistent harassment.

The incidents occurred amidst a Black Lives Matter march through Newport, adding a tense backdrop to the criminal activity.

According to court reports, Burgess threatened to violently assault one teenage girl during the robbery, warning her that he would 'smash' her head in if she did not comply.

The assault took place in December 2020, coinciding with the protests, and involved Burgess grabbing the victim and pushing her against a wall.

Witnesses at the scene recounted hearing Burgess threaten the girl, saying, 'If you don’t shut your mouth, I’m going to smash your head in.' During the incident, he also stole her bank card, further demonstrating his aggressive behavior.

In addition to the robbery, Burgess subjected another young woman to relentless harassment, bombarding her with nearly 2,500 phone calls over a span of less than a month.

The court was told that this persistent harassment left the victim feeling extremely stressed and anxious, significantly impacting her mental well-being.

Prosecutor Andrew Davies emphasized the severity of Burgess’s actions, highlighting the distress caused to the victims.

Kyron Burgess, aged 23 and residing on Chepstow Road in Newport, pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and harassment.

His criminal record is extensive, with 17 previous convictions covering 35 offences, including violence, drug-related crimes, and dishonesty.

Notably, Burgess had previously served an 18-month prison sentence for child abduction, a crime that underscores his troubling history.

The court, presided over by Recorder Bilal Siddique, expressed deep concern over Burgess’s repeated offenses against children, describing this pattern as 'of great concern.' The judge sentenced Burgess to a total of 24 months in prison—21 months for the robbery and an additional three months for harassment.

These sentences are to be served consecutively, resulting in a combined term of two years.

Upon release, Burgess will be required to pay a victim surcharge, although the identities of the victims remain protected by law.

In a related case from January 2020, Burgess, then 22 and formerly residing in Hart Gardens, Newport, was convicted of child abduction and subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison.

During his incarceration at Parc Prison in Bridgend, Burgess breached a sexual harm prevention order by making over 800 phone calls to an underage girl, a clear violation of court restrictions.

Prosecutor Christopher Evans revealed that between August 1 and August 24, 2019, Burgess made a staggering 851 calls—averaging about 35 calls per day—without detection by prison authorities.

Judge Daniel Williams, who sentenced Burgess last year, condemned his brazen breach of court orders, stating that such conduct warranted immediate custody.

As a result, Burgess received an additional eight months in prison, to run consecutively with his previous sentence.

Like the recent case, Burgess was ordered to pay a victim surcharge upon his release, emphasizing the court’s stance on holding him accountable for his repeated violations and criminal behavior.
