KYE DELL FROM LUTON SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL OFFENCES IN LUTON AND BEDFORDSHIRE
In December 2022, the case of Kye Dell, a man from Luton, gained significant media attention after his involvement in a series of serious sexual offences was highlighted through a documentary and subsequent court proceedings. The Channel 4 programme, titled '24 Hours in Police Custody,' featured an in-depth investigation into Bedfordshire Police’s efforts to apprehend Dell, who had previously been convicted in 2020 for grooming and sexually abusing a schoolgirl.
The documentary focused on the case of a 15-year-old girl who was victimized by Dell.
The victim recounted how Dell initially offered her a place to stay after she experienced a falling out with her family.
Despite her refusal to accept his advances, Dell persisted and ultimately raped her.
The incident was part of a pattern of predatory behavior that Dell exhibited during their interactions.
At the time of filming, Dell’s current partner took the step of requesting 'Clare’s Law,' a legal mechanism that allows individuals to find out if their partner has a history of violent or sexual offences.
This request led to a police investigation, during which detectives from Bedfordshire Police’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team disclosed Dell’s criminal convictions to his partner.
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Laws commented on the significance of this action, stating, “This episode of 24 Hours is a powerful illustration of Clare’s Law in action.
Throughout the programme his current partner speaks positively about Dell and his treatment of her, but is disgusted by the criminal behaviour and abuse disclosed by our detectives.” In February 2020, Dell was sentenced to a 14-year extended prison term after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences, including two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, breaches of a sexual harm prevention order, and possession of an indecent image of a child.
The court heard that Dell, then 21 years old and residing on Guildford Street in Luton, had approached the 15-year-old girl by asking for her phone number.
Their communication quickly escalated, leading to Dell arranging to meet her and offering her a place to stay when she was in distress over her family situation.
During her stay at Dell’s flat, the victim described how he repeatedly made advances towards her.
When she refused his advances, Dell raped her on multiple occasions.
The victim’s account was corroborated by two other individuals who were present in the flat at the time.
These witnesses later accompanied her to the police station, where she reported the assaults.
Following her report, Dell was arrested and charged with several offences.
He subsequently pleaded guilty in court to two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, two breaches of his sexual harm prevention order, and possession of an indecent image of a child.
The court sentenced him to nine years in prison, with an additional five years on licence, making his total custodial period 14 years.
Furthermore, Dell is now subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order upon his release and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
