OXFORD TEACHER KIN MING HUNG JAILED FOR SEX WITH PUPIL IN READING COURT

In September 2017, a teacher from Oxford was sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor student. Kin Ming Hung, aged 33, was found guilty of a series of inappropriate encounters with a 15-year-old girl, which took place while her parents believed he was merely providing her with private mathematics tuition to help her improve her academic performance.

According to the prosecution, led by Abigail Husbands, the relationship between Hung and the girl began to develop through email correspondence after she left her school at the end of Year Nine. The court heard that Hung and the girl had become increasingly friendly, and during this period, he expressed a desire to kiss her when she was only 14 years old.

Hung admitted to three counts of indecent assault, which covered six separate occasions when they engaged in sexual activity between October and December 2003, a period during which the girl was 15 years old. Prosecutor Abigail Husbands stated that the victim had expressed that she liked Hung, and that their relationship had grown more intimate over time. She also revealed that she lost her virginity to Hung when she was 15.

The court was informed that after these events, Hung left his teaching position in Cambridgeshire and relocated to Oxford at the end of 2003. Judge Zoe Smith described Hung’s conduct as a “gross breach of trust,” emphasizing the severity of his actions.

In her sentencing, Judge Smith ordered that Hung serve 12 months in prison for each of the charges, with all sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, she prohibited him from working with children in any capacity in the future and mandated that he be placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of 10 years. The case highlights the serious consequences of abusing positions of trust and the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation.
