KIELAN MOONEY FROM DERRY SENTENCED TO EIGHT AND A HALF YEARS FOR RAPE IN DUBLIN

A soldier originally from Londonderry, known as Kielan Mooney, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of eight and a half years after being found guilty of raping a fellow member of the Irish Defence Forces. The incident took place in a hotel located in Dublin, and the conviction was handed down following a trial at Dublin's Central Criminal Court in December of the previous year.

Mooney, aged 30 and residing in Bloomfield Park, Derry, faced serious charges after the court heard evidence of his assault on the woman in July 2021. The court's decision to impose the full sentence was made despite attempts by Mooney's legal representatives to have part of his sentence suspended. The judge refused this request, citing the seriousness of the crime and the impact on the victim.

During the sentencing hearing, the court was presented with affidavits from Mooney’s relatives and friends, offering character references. Some of these statements highlighted Mooney’s role as a caring father to his five children, with one relative stating that “his children miss him dearly,” and another describing him as “adoring” and “dedicated” to his children. However, the court also considered contrasting testimonies from the mothers of his children, who painted a different picture of his involvement.

One mother explained that after their relationship ended, Mooney had failed to maintain contact with their child, who was reportedly reluctant to see him because he was perceived as someone who “always lets them down.” She further stated, “I would never let him near my children now,” emphasizing her lack of trust. Another mother added that Mooney had “never paid child maintenance” and recounted instances where he had forgotten to pick up their child from playschool.

Judge Tony Hunt reviewed these conflicting accounts and concluded that Mooney’s claims of being a devoted father were “grossly overstated.” The judge also noted that the victim was a “robust person” who had made her allegations for justifiable reasons, and her mental health had been significantly affected by the assault, leaving her feeling suicidal. The victim’s impact statement was read aloud, with her describing the incident as having “changed my life” and expressing the profound emotional toll it had taken.

Throughout the proceedings, Mooney showed no remorse or acknowledgment of his guilt. Following the conviction, the Irish Defence Forces confirmed that his pay had been ceased and that steps were underway to discharge him from the military service. The case underscores the gravity of the crime and the justice system’s response to such serious offenses, especially involving members of the armed forces.
