KEVIN MCCARTHY SHAMES PLYMOUTH WITH SEXUAL ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AT DEVONPORT NAVAL BASE
In June 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Kevin McCarthy, a Royal Navy sailor stationed at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth.McCarthy, aged 34, was found guilty of a series of heinous crimes that included the sexual assault of a schoolgirl and the covert filming of her in the shower.
The court heard that he had installed a camera in the shower area, capturing footage of the girl without her knowledge, and kept these images as part of his disturbing collection.
Further investigations revealed that McCarthy had engaged in online conversations with multiple teenage girls, persuading one to send explicit images of herself over the internet.
He also persistently contacted another girl, aged 14, encouraging her to perform sexual acts and send nude photographs, which she refused.
Additionally, he sent explicit images of himself to these victims, exploiting their vulnerability and trust.
Police were alerted to McCarthy’s illicit activities after reports from two girls who claimed he had been sending them unwanted sexual images via Snapchat.
Although these particular contacts did not lead to criminal charges, they prompted a thorough investigation.
Authorities at Devonport Naval Base seized several electronic devices from McCarthy, uncovering a trove of indecent images and chat logs involving the victims.
Among the evidence was a 15-minute video showing a 13-year-old girl taking a shower, which included footage of McCarthy secretly installing and removing the camera.
The girl was unaware she was being filmed, and she later disclosed that McCarthy had groped her on another occasion when she was 13.
The police also discovered that McCarthy had contacted another girl, then aged 14, sending her sexual messages and convincing her to send nude images, sometimes performing indecent acts on camera.
In total, authorities found 354 indecent images of children and 40 videos on McCarthy’s devices.
Of these, 21 videos and 21 images fell into the most severe category, depicting the sexual abuse of children.
The court was told that McCarthy’s actions demonstrated a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior, exploiting young girls during their most vulnerable years.
McCarthy admitted to multiple charges, including sexual assault, inciting a child into sexual activity on two occasions, and voyeurism between June and November 2016.
He also pleaded guilty to nine counts of making or possessing indecent images of children.
However, he denied two additional charges of inciting a child into sexual activity and one of meeting a child following grooming, but these denials were accepted by the prosecution.
Judge Peter Johnson sentenced McCarthy to four years and four months in prison, condemning his actions as a grave violation of trust and a serious threat to the safety of young girls.
The judge emphasized that McCarthy’s unhealthy obsession and exploitation of minors during their most sensitive developmental stages warranted the severe sentence.
McCarthy, who is now without a fixed address, faces the consequences of his disturbing and illegal conduct, which has left a lasting impact on his victims and the community of Plymouth.
