KEVIN HOOD SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN EDINBURGH FOR BRUTAL RAPE AND ABDUCTION
A man named Kevin Hood has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after committing a series of heinous crimes in Edinburgh, including abduction, assault, and a particularly violent rape. The incident took place in August 2021 at an address within the city, where Hood, aged 34, subjected a woman to a terrifying and brutal ordeal that has left a lasting impact.
The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where it was revealed that Hood had forcibly restrained the woman by tying her to a bed, preventing her from escaping.
During the attack, Hood demanded access to her mobile phone password, seeking to see who she had been communicating with.
The court heard that he then physically restrained her by fastening her ankles and wrists to the bed, effectively detaining her against her will.
This act of captivity was part of a sustained assault that involved extreme violence.
According to court reports, Hood then escalated his attack by choking the woman before proceeding to rape her.
The victim, despite the trauma, managed to summon the courage to contact the police, which led to an investigation into Hood’s activities.
Law enforcement officials uncovered sufficient evidence to charge him, culminating in his conviction.
In a revealing statement during the trial, Hood confided in a social worker involved in assessing his background, admitting that he had previously engaged with sex workers.
He also disclosed a preference for sexual activities involving restraints and strangulation, indicating a pattern of risky and dangerous sexual behavior.
The judge, Lord Arthurson, emphasized the severity of Hood’s actions, noting that he had been assessed as being at high risk of re-offending.
As a result, the court determined that Hood should be under supervision for ten years following his release.
The judge described the crime as one of the most severe he had encountered in his judicial career.
He characterized the attack as a prolonged and calculated assault, involving sickening acts of violence intended to exert control over the victim.
Lord Arthurson stated, “This crime is one of the worst that I’ve had to deal with in my judicial career.
It was a sustained assault using sickening acts of violence undertaken with the purpose of controlling your victim.” In delivering the sentence, Lord Arthurson highlighted that the punishment was necessary not only to penalize Hood but also to reflect society’s revulsion and to serve as a deterrent to others.
The court sentenced Hood to 15 years in prison, with the additional stipulation that he be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The case had previously seen Hood plead guilty to charges of threatening behavior and assaulting another woman in 2018, and he was unemployed at the time of his arrest.
Prosecutor Richard Goddard KC pointed out Hood’s extensive criminal record, which includes 26 previous convictions, many involving offenses against women and weapons.
Hood had also been subject to non-harassment orders in 2016 and 2018 for domestic-related assaults involving a knife, as well as convictions related to offensive weapons such as a hammer and screwdriver.
On Wednesday, the court imposed an extended sentence of 25 years, comprising a custodial period of 15 years followed by a 10-year extension on license.
The judge detailed the gravity of Hood’s crimes, describing the attack as involving the use of a knife, limb restraints, sexual torture, and multiple penetrative acts aimed at controlling and terrorizing his victim.
The attack also included threats to kill her, with Hood covering her nose and mouth to prevent her from breathing and choking her to the point of danger to her life.
The judge noted that Hood’s use of alcohol, valium, and steroids during the assault contributed to the severity of his actions.
He further explained that Hood’s extensive criminal history, including previous violent and weapon-related offenses, demonstrated a pattern of escalating violence and control over women.
A detailed risk assessment indicated that Hood poses a high risk of reoffending, particularly in terms of sexual violence and coercive control.
The court emphasized the importance of a robust supervision period after his release, given the danger he presents to the public, especially women.
The sentence also includes a non-harassment order preventing Hood from contacting the victim indefinitely.
The court’s decision reflects a commitment to public safety and the need to impose a punishment commensurate with the gravity of the crimes committed.
Finally, Hood will be subject to the notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect potential future victims.
