KEVIN GERAGHTY FROM RAINHILL SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG GIRLS

In a case that has shocked the community of Rainhill, Kevin Geraghty, a man residing on Stoney Lane, has been handed a severe prison sentence of 20 years following his conviction on multiple serious charges related to sexual offences. The lengthy legal process culminated in a conviction that highlights the gravity of his crimes and the resilience of his victims.

Geraghty, aged 56 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of a total of 28 charges under the Sexual Offences Act. These charges included indecent assault and rape, crimes committed over a span of several years. The offences took place during the 1970s and 1980s, involving two young girls who, at the time, were just children and later teenagers. The victims endured years of suffering before they finally decided to come forward and report their experiences to the police, which led to a comprehensive investigation.

Throughout the trial, Geraghty maintained his innocence, denying all allegations. His refusal to admit guilt meant that the victims had to relive their traumatic experiences during the court proceedings, which undoubtedly added to their ordeal. The case was heard at Liverpool Crown Court, where Judge Mark Brown presided over the sentencing.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Brown ordered Geraghty to serve 16 years for the rape charges and an additional four years for the indecent assaults. The sentences are to be served consecutively, meaning Geraghty will spend a total of 20 years behind bars before being eligible for parole. Furthermore, he was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities post-release.

Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Kathy Goodwin of the police force involved in the investigation expressed her thoughts on the case. She described the investigation as complex and protracted, acknowledging the difficulties faced by the Unity Team during the lengthy inquiry. Sergeant Goodwin emphasized that the conviction serves as a stark reminder to other potential offenders that the police are committed to uncovering and prosecuting crimes of this nature.

She further stated, “Geraghty’s conviction should serve as a reminder to other offenders who seek to sexually prey on children. The police will use every resource available to uncover this type of offending and will result in dangerous sex offenders going to prison for a very long time.”
