KEVIN ESCRITT FROM HEMLINGTON SENTENCED FOR GROOMING TEEN GIRLS IN TEESSIDE

In June 2014, Kevin Escritt, a 76-year-old man residing in Hemlington, was sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of grooming two young girls. Escritt, a former offshore oil rig worker with international experience, used gifts such as chocolates, vodka, and money to manipulate and lure the victims into his home.

Prosecutor Jodie Kidd outlined to Teesside Crown Court that Escritt summoned the girls, aged 12 and 13, into his residence over a period of five days in December of the previous year. During these encounters, he provided one girl with £30 and the other with £10 before subjecting them to sexual abuse.

The case came to light after another teenager confided in her mother about rumors circulating regarding Escritt and the girls. The mother, concerned about the allegations, promptly reported the matter to Cleveland Police. Following Escritt’s arrest, his home was targeted in an attack, reflecting the community’s outrage. He was subsequently taken into custody and spent some time hospitalized.

During the court proceedings, Miss Kidd read aloud a Victim’s Impact Statement from the 13-year-old victim, who is legally protected from identification. The statement expressed profound distress, stating, “This has changed my life completely. I feel that I am being punished because of what he did.” It was also revealed that Social Services had previously been involved with both girls and their families before the offenses occurred, indicating pre-existing vulnerabilities.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, acknowledged the significance of this prior involvement, emphasizing that the girls’ vulnerability was a critical factor in the case.

Defense lawyer Sean Grainger highlighted that Escritt was of previously good character, had fully admitted his guilt at the police station, and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. He expressed that Escritt was deeply ashamed and disgusted by his actions, noting that his family had disowned him.

The judge addressed Escritt directly, stating, “Your life may have changed completely because of what you did to satisfy your sexual desires, but her life has been changed completely because of what you did to her.”

As a result, Escritt was sentenced to two years in prison, ordered to register as a sex offender for life, and given a Sexual Offenses Prevention Order that prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with girls under 16 indefinitely. He was convicted of three charges related to inciting the girls to engage in sexual activity between December 8 and 13 of the previous year.

Earlier in March 2014, Escritt, also 76 and from Middlesbrough, had admitted to inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. During that hearing at Teesside Crown Court, he struggled to hear proceedings despite the use of a hearing loop and was permitted to leave the dock to approach the judge for better hearing.

The case was adjourned by Judge George Moorhouse after new developments emerged, which cast a different light on the case. Escritt was granted bail and scheduled to return to court on April 21 for sentencing, pending further proceedings.
