KEVIN DENHOLM CAUGHT IN ONLINE PREDATOR SCHEME IN HULL
In November 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Kevin Denholm, a 57-year-old man from Hull, who was caught attempting to engage in illicit online activities with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl.The incident was part of a sting operation conducted by a paedophile hunting group, which had set up a decoy profile posing as a vulnerable young teenager to catch predators attempting to exploit minors over the internet.
Denholm, a father of five, initiated contact with the decoy girl during the early hours of the morning, sending a simple greeting of "Hi." He then proceeded to reveal personal details about himself, claiming to work on the railway and openly expressing a preference for younger girls.
In a highly inappropriate and predatory manner, he offered to be her "sugar daddy," indicating a desire to establish a financial and sexual relationship with the fictitious minor.
The decoy, maintaining the guise of a 14-year-old girl, responded cautiously, stating her age.
Denholm quickly escalated the conversation, asking if she wanted to "play" and to "chat," and the two exchanged mobile phone numbers.
Their communication moved to WhatsApp, where Denholm made explicit sexual suggestions, describing various sexual activities in graphic detail.
He sent three intimate photographs of himself, along with a video of himself performing a sex act, and included images and videos of women, further demonstrating his predatory intent.
Throughout the exchange, the man discussed the possibility of meeting up, although no specific plans were made.
The online group founder, who had been monitoring the conversation, confronted Denholm and promptly alerted the police.
Authorities intervened to prevent any potential harm and to apprehend the suspect.
During the court proceedings, Judge John Thackray QC addressed Denholm, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
He acknowledged that Denholm believed he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl, but pointed out that it was a decoy designed to trap predators.
The judge noted that, fortunately, no actual harm was caused, as the decoy was an undercover operation.
However, he condemned Denholm’s behavior as "vile and disgusting" and highlighted the significant age disparity involved.
It was revealed that Denholm had attempted to delete messages to conceal evidence of his misconduct, but this did not prevent his conviction.
The court recognized that while some remorse was evident, the severity of the offense warranted a custodial sentence.
Consequently, Denholm was sentenced to two years in prison.
Additionally, he was issued a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender for the same period, underscoring the ongoing risk he poses to the community and the importance of monitoring his activities in the future.
