KEVIN ADAIR AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN CLYDEBANK AND DUMBARTON

Kevin Adair, a 34-year-old man from Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, has been sentenced to a total of fifteen years in prison after a series of horrific crimes committed against five women over a span of ten years. His violent and sexual offenses have shocked the local communities and highlighted the dangerous nature of this convicted rapist.

A High Court in Edinburgh heard harrowing details about Adair's relentless pattern of abuse, which included both physical violence and sexual assault. Among his crimes, he assaulted women on multiple occasions, with some victims enduring both assault and rape. The judiciary described his behavior as callous and controlling, revealing that Adair often showed little remorse and accepted minimal responsibility for his actions.

The judge presiding over the case delivered a stern warning to Adair, stating, "You were, are and will remain a danger to any woman with whom you have a relationship and perhaps women at large." The court heard that that statement was supported by a background report indicating Adair's lack of insight into his conduct. The judge, Michael O'Grady QC, further emphasized the need for ongoing supervision, adding that an additional six-year period on license would follow his nine-year imprisonment.

According to the court proceedings, Adair's first victim endured a series of terrifying episodes, including being flicked and punched in the face, before being subjected to serious indecent assault at a residence in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, shortly before Christmas in 2007. During this attack, he restrained her, establishing a pattern of violence that would recur in his later crimes.

Further accounts revealed that Adair called his victims degrading names, checked their loyalty to him by intrusive means, and exerted extreme control over their lives. Although he was described as initially charming, his darker tendencies quickly surfaced. In 2005, he headbutted and kicked another woman during an assault in Dumbarton. In 2011, he relentlessly hounded a third victim, bombarding her with text messages and attacking her at a flat in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, pushing her down stairs in the process.

His brutality continued at locations including Greenock, Inverclyde, where he physically assaulted a fourth woman, punching her while she held a baby, grabbing her by the throat, slapping, and kicking her. In that case, the woman even lied to police and a midwife, concealing the extent of the abuse to avoid further trauma.

The Court also detailed the most recent and most severe offense—a rape committed in a flat in Greenock just days before Christmas in 2014. During this assault, Adair removed the victim’s clothing and engaged in sexual acts with her. He coercively threatened to withhold compromising photographs stored on his mobile phone unless she engaged in sex with him, effectively holding her hostage with these photographs.

Prosecutor Duncan McPhie explained to the jury that the victim understood Adair possessed explicit photographs of her, which he used to exert control over her. The court heard that her fear and emotional distress compelled her to comply in exchange for the photographs' deletion.

Describing Adair’s conduct as analogous to “a cat playing with a mouse,” Judge O'Grady expressed his concern regarding the threat his behavior continues to pose. During sentencing, the defense counsel, Mark Stewart QC, acknowledged that Adair had never served a prison sentence before and recognized that the court was likely to impose a substantial custodial term.

Following the sentencing, detectives involved in the case expressed their gratitude to the victims for their bravery. Detective Sergeant Iain Renfrew, from the West Domestic Abuse Taskforce, reaffirmed the seriousness of Adair’s crimes, calling him an “extremely dangerous individual” who poses a real threat to women. He emphasized that it was only thanks to the courage of the victims who came forward that the extent of Adair’s abusive pattern was uncovered.

The officer also reminded the public that victims of domestic abuse or anyone with concerns should contact Police Scotland at 101, promising that authorities will do everything possible to bring perpetrators like Adair to justice. The case underscores the importance of standing against violence and abuse, particularly in communities such as Clydebank and the surrounding areas where Adair once resided.
