KENNETH WATSON SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE NEAR GREAT PLUMSTEAD IN LOWESTOFT
A man identified as Kenneth Watson, aged 53 and residing in Lowestoft, has been handed a significant prison sentence after being convicted of a brutal assault that took place on a rural country lane near Great Plumstead. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, shocked the local community and led to a lengthy legal process culminating in today’s sentencing at Norwich Crown Court.Watson was found guilty of multiple serious charges, including rape, intentional strangulation, and making threats to kill. The trial, which took place earlier this year at the same court, revealed disturbing details about the attack that unfolded on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. According to court proceedings, Watson and his victim were walking together along Smee Lane when he suddenly turned violent.
During the assault, Watson subjected the woman to a rape, physically restrained her by holding her neck in a manner that prevented her from breathing, and ominously threatened to kill her. The victim, in a desperate bid to escape, managed to attract the attention of two dog walkers passing by. She ran to seek their help, which ultimately led to Watson’s arrest. Police officers apprehended Watson shortly after the incident, near the scene of the attack.
Today’s sentencing saw Watson receive a prison term of 12 years, complemented by an additional three years on extended licence, reflecting the severity of his crimes. Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent any future offenses.
In a poignant impact statement read aloud during the hearing, the victim expressed the profound emotional toll the assault has taken on her. She stated, “This incident has completely broken me. I’ve had to reach out and accept support from many services, which I find hard to do. But all I can do is put my head down and carry on until hopefully one day, it will somehow feel better.”
Detective Constable Helen Walters, who led the investigation into the case, emphasized the danger Watson poses. She remarked, “Watson is a dangerous individual who took advantage of someone who should have been able to trust him.” The case underscores the importance of vigilance and justice in addressing violent crimes committed in seemingly quiet rural areas.
