KENNETH MARTIN'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN CUMNOCK: DOGS STARVED AND LEFT TO DIE

Kenneth Martin, a former dog breeder from Cumnock, has been convicted of severe animal neglect after abandoning his property and leaving three dogs to suffer and die from starvation. The distressing case unfolded in August 2021 when authorities discovered the neglected animals at his residence on John Weir Avenue, with previous addresses on Muirkirk Road, Cumnock.

According to reports, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) responded to a distress call that led them to the property, which was reportedly covered in dog mess and in a deplorable state of neglect. Investigators found the three dogs in a dire condition, with one of them deceased and partially eaten in the garden, indicating the severity of the neglect.

The deceased dog was identified as a female Dogue de Bordeaux, which appeared to have been partly consumed by scavengers. The other two dogs, also of the Dogue de Bordeaux breed and a Japanese Akita, were found emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from severe health issues. The living Dogue de Bordeaux exhibited infected sores on its body, possibly emitting a rotting smell, while the Akita showed signs of repetitive behaviour, a typical sign of stress or ammonia inhalation from confinement.

Veterinary examinations confirmed that all three animals had no body fat reserves, were severely dehydrated, and exhibited muscle wastage. The conditions of the animals were so critical that they would have likely died if intervention had not occurred in time. The SSPCA intervened just in time to prevent further tragedy.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Rosalind Walsh revealed that the SSPCA had been alerted after a report of a dead dog seen in the garden. Investigators located Martin’s sister, who informed them that he had abandoned the property and was not present at the scene. Martin, who had previously pleaded guilty to three animal welfare charges, was not at the property during the investigation.

His solicitor, Tony Curry, explained that Martin had raised the dogs from pups and that they had since been rehomed. He also stated that Martin was going through a personal crisis at the time, which led to his rapid decline and inability to care for himself or his animals. The court heard that Martin’s health and personal difficulties contributed to the neglect.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew described the case as a “fairly sad and sorry story,” emphasizing that Martin’s personal struggles, including health issues, played a significant role in the tragic neglect of the animals.

As a result of his actions, Kenneth Martin was fined £2,075 and received a lifelong ban from keeping dogs. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the devastating consequences of neglect and abandonment in the community of Cumnock.
