KELLY JONES STRANGLES ELDERLY DOG AND BEATS UP DRUG ADDICT IN NEW ROMNEY

Kelly Jones, born around 1967 and residing on Station Road in New Romney, was convicted in 2023 of a brutal assault and animal cruelty incident that shocked the local community. The case revealed a disturbing sequence of violence that unfolded in Folkestone, involving Jones and a 66-year-old man named Martin Marsh, who was known to be a drug addict.

Jones, a former soldier with a history of military service in the Falklands War, arrived at Pavilion Court in Marine Terrace, Folkestone, late at night on April 14, 2023. He had only known Mr. Marsh for about a week when he showed up shouting outside his residence. Both men were reportedly heavy users of Class A drugs, and their interactions were characterized by acrimony, aggression, and verbal abuse, which escalated into physical violence.

According to prosecutor Caroline Knight, the confrontation began when Mr. Marsh expressed frustration over his inability to afford electricity for his bedsit. Once Jones entered the property, a heated argument ensued, leading to Jones physically assaulting Mr. Marsh. Knight detailed that Jones punched Mr. Marsh in the face, knocking him to the ground. The assault then continued with Jones kicking, punching, and stamping on Mr. Marsh’s head for what was described as approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

During the attack, Jones also inflicted severe pain by putting his fingers and thumbs into Mr. Marsh’s eyes, causing him to fear he might go blind. Mr. Marsh recounted being in terror for his life and screaming for help as the assault persisted. The court heard that Jones eventually fell asleep on a sofa inside the property. When he awoke the following morning, he offered an apology for his actions.

However, the violence did not end there. The court was told that Jones then turned his attention to Mr. Marsh’s elderly dog, a thin and possibly malnourished animal named Jack-Jack. Ms. Knight explained that Jones told Mr. Marsh that the dog should be put down. When Mr. Marsh refused, Jones took the dog into the bathroom, wrapped a cord around its neck, and strangled it to death. This act of cruelty shocked everyone involved and marked a tragic culmination of the violent episode.

Following the killing, Mr. Marsh managed to escape to a neighbor’s house and called the police. Officers arrived to find Jones hiding in the kitchen, where he reportedly admitted to the officers, saying, “I’ll admit to what I’ve done and I would do it again.” During police interviews, Jones claimed to have acted in self-defense and even suggested that he had assisted Mr. Marsh in killing Jack-Jack, a statement that further complicated the case.

Jones, who has a lengthy criminal record with 33 previous convictions for 63 offences, later pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. His defense lawyer, Sarah Thorne, urged the court to show some mercy, highlighting Jones’s struggles with long-term drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues, including bipolar disorder. She also mentioned that Jones had recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

In sentencing, Recorder Michael Turner condemned Jones for his “prolonged and persistent” attack on Mr. Marsh, describing him as a “hopeless heroin addict.” Regarding the killing of Jack-Jack, the judge acknowledged that this act was a gross lapse of judgment, driven by Jones’s drug addiction and impaired mental state at the time. The use of a ligature to strangle the dog was considered an aggravating factor, as it effectively involved the use of a weapon. The judge emphasized that Jones did not just harm the animal but inflicted the ultimate penalty without any justification.

At the time of the incident, animal cruelty laws carried a maximum sentence of six months in jail. However, new legislation introduced in July increased the maximum penalty to five years. The judge noted that Jones was fortunate to have committed the crime just three months before this law change. He also expressed hope that Jones would continue the progress made during his time in prison on remand and that he might receive good news regarding his health.

Jones was sentenced to 27 months in prison for the assault on Mr. Marsh and received a concurrent sentence of 19 weeks for the killing of Jack-Jack. Additionally, he was issued a three-year restraining order to prevent any contact with Mr. Marsh or further incidents. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of New Romney and Folkestone, highlighting the dangers of drug abuse and mental health issues intertwined with violent behavior.
