A 26-year-old drama teacher from Newport has been found guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a pupil, a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community.Kelly Burgess, who was employed at a school in Newport, admitted to having a seven-month affair with a teenage boy, which took place between January and August of the previous year.
The details of the case were revealed during a court hearing at Bristol Crown Court, where it was disclosed that the relationship was not only inappropriate but also constituted a breach of trust and professional conduct.
According to court records, the relationship came to light after the teenage boy, who was between 16 and 17 years old at the time, visited a sexual health clinic alongside Burgess.
She was experiencing symptoms of an infection, which prompted the visit.
This medical appointment became the catalyst for the investigation that ultimately uncovered the illicit relationship.
The court heard that Burgess and the boy had sexual encounters at least once a week during the seven-month period, raising serious concerns about the abuse of authority and the exploitation of a minor.
