KEITH EDMONDS SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN CARDIFF
A convicted paedophile, Keith Edmonds, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 21 years after the horrific details of his abuse came to light and evidence was brought forward. The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, where the judge delivered a stern message, explicitly stating that Edmonds, aged 86 and residing in Taff's Well, Rhondda Cynon Taf, would serve his time knowing that death in prison was inevitable, and expressing no sympathy for his plight.
The case against Edmonds was built on disturbing recordings, which had been secretly made by two of his victims.
These victims, who are now adults, secretly captured moments when Edmonds, unaware of the recording, apologized for his actions.
In the recordings, Edmonds could be heard saying, "I'm sorry.
I wish I could turn back the clock then I wouldn't have done it." This confession, made amid what appeared to be remorse, was handed over to the police and formed a crucial part of the evidence in the trial.
During the court proceedings, Edmonds claimed that he was tired and simply wanted to go to bed when he made his confession.
He argued that he did not actually commit any of the acts he was accused of; instead, he insisted that he told the children what they wanted to hear to make them go away.
However, the jury found him guilty of 11 sexual assault charges against four children, all under the age of 13, committed between 2001 and 2015.
The victims, now adults, bravely shared how the abuse inflicted upon them has had lasting psychological effects.
One of them told the court, "I was cheated out of a happy childhood.
The constant dark cloud that has hung over me ever since has never diminished," highlighting the deep emotional scars left by Edmonds’ actions.
The court was also informed that Edmonds’ health has been declining, and he is currently under the care of a cardiologist.
In passing sentence, Judge Michael Fitton KC emphasized his lack of empathy for Edmonds’ condition, underscoring the gravity of his crimes.
He stated, "I recognise that it is inevitable that you will die in prison.
That is a matter that moves me to not a shred of sympathy for you.
You are a man who is morally bankrupt and have shown no remorse.
You ruined the childhood of four children, bringing shame, pain and emotional turmoil on them." The judge also announced that Edmonds would serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison, which means he would not be eligible for parole until he is near the age of 100.
Furthermore, Edmonds was ordered to comply with a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and was required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
The court commended the victims for their exceptionally commendable and courageous efforts in bringing the case to justice, acknowledging their strength in facing their past traumas to seek justice.
The judge’s stern verdict underscores the seriousness with which the justice system views such heinous acts of abuse, aiming to protect society and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
