EDMONTON MAN KEITH DYER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SISTERS FROM WOOD GREEN
In a case that has spanned over three decades, a man from Edmonton, Keith Dyer, has been convicted and sentenced for the sexual abuse of two sisters who were children at the time. The disturbing events took place between 1974 and 1976, when the victims were just five and eight years old. Dyer, a former employee of Haringey Council, was found guilty of multiple charges related to his heinous acts.Keith Dyer, aged 54 and residing on Woodlands Road in Edmonton, was sentenced to three years in prison on a Wednesday after a court hearing at Wood Green Crown Court. The court heard how Dyer targeted the young girls separately, taking advantage of his position when he was assigned to clear the overgrown garden of the victims' family home in Wood Green. The abuse was kept secret for many years, with the sisters suffering in silence and not even confiding in each other about their traumatic experiences until recently.
The case was brought to light in January of this year when one of the women, now in her 30s, came across a photograph of Dyer in a North London newspaper. The image was striking because Dyer had recently been awarded for his work in maintaining park safety, a fact that shocked the victim and prompted her to contact the police. Following her call, authorities swiftly arrested Dyer and charged him with three counts of indecent assault, one count of indecency with a child, and one count of gross indecency. Dyer denied all allegations during the proceedings.
Both sisters attended the court hearing to witness Dyer's sentencing. One of the women, who requested anonymity for legal reasons, expressed her feelings afterward, stating, “It was terrible to have to go to court but I had to be there to see the outcome. I feel relieved Dyer is behind bars, but I feel he should have received a longer sentence. Three years is nothing compared to the 30 years I have suffered.”
She recounted the moment she found the strength to contact the police, saying, “When I saw him in the paper receiving an award, I was so angry, and I thought to myself, I have to do something now.” The woman, a married mother of two from Tottenham, revealed that her silence over the years led to severe consequences, including struggles with alcohol addiction, depression, and even a suicide attempt. She hopes that the prison sentence will mark the beginning of a new chapter for her and her sister.
“This experience has brought my sister and me closer,” she added. “In the past, the abuse caused us to avoid each other. Now, we are both receiving support and help. To anyone who has been abused, I urge you to speak out. It doesn’t matter how much time has passed; there is nothing to be ashamed of. Find the courage to seek help and do what you need to do.”
PC Mick Allen, who led the investigation, praised the victims for their bravery, stating, “I would like to pay tribute to the courage and determination of the victims to see this through. I have no doubt that Dyer has probably committed other offences in the past.”
