KEIR WOTHERSPOON FROM AIRDRIE SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN GLASGOW AND STRATHCLYDE UNIVERSITY AREA

Keir Wotherspoon, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses, has been officially branded as a significant threat to public safety following his recent conviction and sentencing. Wotherspoon, aged 24, was found guilty of heinous crimes committed against two women, with the incidents taking place in different locations within Glasgow and its surroundings.

His first assault occurred in June 2019 at a hotel located in the Kelvingrove area of Glasgow. Over the course of two days, Wotherspoon subjected a woman to three separate attacks. During these assaults, he employed violent and controlling tactics, including binding her wrists with a belt, choking her, and biting her. The victim testified about her terrifying ordeal during the trial, describing the repeated nature of the attacks and the fear she experienced.

The second attack took place on August 11, 2020, in the Rottenrow area of Glasgow, near the grounds of Strathclyde University. Wotherspoon pounced on another woman in this location, further demonstrating his pattern of predatory behavior. The details of this assault were also presented during the court proceedings, highlighting the danger Wotherspoon posed to the community.

Following a trial held in Airdrie, Wotherspoon was convicted of four counts of rape, including one charge that involved a threat to the victim’s life. The case was brought before the High Court in Glasgow, where he was sentenced on Wednesday to five and a half years in prison. The presiding judge, Lord Burns, emphasized the seriousness of Wotherspoon’s actions and his ongoing risk to the public. He stated, “Your attitude demonstrates that you are a serious risk to the public at large. For those reasons, you require an extended sentence.”

Lord Burns also ordered that Wotherspoon be monitored for an additional three years upon his release from prison. Furthermore, he was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the potential danger he continues to pose.

In his defense, Wotherspoon’s legal representative, Brian McConnachie, noted that the offender still has the support of his partner and family. McConnachie expressed the difficulty Wotherspoon faces in accepting his conviction, stating, “He has found it extremely difficult to get his head round that he was convicted of these charges.” Despite this support, the court’s decision underscores the serious concern regarding Wotherspoon’s behavior and the need for ongoing supervision to protect the community from further harm.
