KAYLEIGH LOREY FROM PENLAN SWANSEA SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PUPPY GARY

In January 2024, a disturbing case of animal cruelty came to light in Penlan, Swansea, involving Kayleigh Lorey, also known as Kaylee Lorey, who resides on Prescelli Road. Lorey was found guilty of neglecting a one-year-old bull-breed puppy named Gary, who was discovered in a deplorable state inside her property.

Gary was found in a severely malnourished condition, confined within a tiny cage that was filthy, saturated with urine and faeces, and lacked any semblance of proper care or comfort. The RSPCA inspector who responded to a report about a collapsed dog encountered Lorey during an initial visit to her residence. However, she refused entry to the inspectors and promptly left the premises. Despite multiple attempts to contact her via phone, Lorey failed to respond, prompting the police to be called to assist in gaining access.

When Lorey eventually returned to the property, the inspectors were allowed inside and taken to the kitchen, where they found Gary in a dire state. The dog was visibly emaciated, with his bones clearly protruding through his skin, and he was living amidst his own waste. The conditions of his confinement were appalling, with the blanket in his cage being filthy and soaked in urine and faeces. Lorey admitted that she was the sole owner and responsible for Gary and agreed to surrender him to the RSPCA. She also disclosed that the dog had not been seen by a veterinarian prior to his rescue.

Gary was immediately transported to a veterinary clinic for urgent treatment. He was hospitalized over the weekend before being transferred to an RSPCA facility for ongoing care. A veterinary examination revealed that Gary was in a critically poor condition, with a body score of just one out of nine. He weighed only 11.4 kilograms at the time of assessment, whereas a healthy weight for his breed and age would be approximately 15 kilograms. The vet confirmed that Gary’s suffering was unnecessary and avoidable, caused by Lorey’s failure to provide adequate nutrition and proper living conditions. The examination also noted superficial skin wounds and faecal soiling, indicating neglect and unsanitary living arrangements.

In court, Lorey pleaded guilty to two offences under the Animal Welfare Act. Her sentencing included a 16-week jail term, which was suspended for one year, along with 15 days of rehabilitation. She was also ordered to pay a financial penalty totaling £354. Additionally, Lorey was banned from keeping dogs for a period of seven years, a restriction that will remain in effect until November 2031. This case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the consequences faced by those who neglect their responsibilities as pet owners.
