KAYLEIGH LAYBOURN'S CRUELTY IN SUNDERLAND: PET LURCHER MARGO STARVES TO THE BRINK

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Sunderland community, Kayleigh Laybourn, born on October 29, 1990, and residing at Londonderry Terrace, Sunderland SR3 2EE, was found guilty of neglecting her pet lurcher, Margo, leading to severe suffering and emaciation.

The incident came to light after concerned members of the public tipped off the RSPCA, prompting an investigation into the welfare of the dog. Sunderland magistrates heard that inspectors from the RSPCA visited Laybourn’s residence multiple times in June 2017, but she failed to respond or cooperate during these visits.

The case revealed a heartbreaking scene: Margo, a once lively and healthy dog, was discovered confined in a small, cramped utility area within the home. The dog was described as 'emaciated,' with her ribs, hips, and spine prominently visible, indicating a severe state of starvation. When examined, Margo weighed only 25.3 kilograms, whereas her healthy weight should have been around 30 kilograms. Her coat was in poor condition, further evidence of neglect.

Veterinary tests showed that Margo was suffering from low red blood cell counts and other health issues, likely caused by prolonged starvation or possibly liver problems. The inspectors noted that her condition was critical, and her suffering was evident. A few weeks after being fed a proper diet, Margo was taken back to the vet and had gained approximately 6 pounds, a sign of her recovery.

Prosecutor John Ellwood, speaking on behalf of the RSPCA, emphasized the gravity of the case: “This case concerns a dog – Margo. She was emaciated. She was in a small, cramped utility area. She was extremely skinny, with prominent hips, ribs, and spine. All the ridges on her spine were visible. Margo’s condition was dire, and her weight was below the healthy range. Blood tests confirmed she was suffering from starvation or related health issues.”

He further explained, “Since emaciation is the lowest stage of starvation before death, this case must have involved a prolonged period of suffering. While the defendant admits she should have taken Margo to the vet, she does not seem to accept that she should have fed her adequately. Thankfully, Margo has now been restored to full health.”

Laybourn pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The court was scheduled to sentence her on December 7, 2017, but no further details about the outcome have been made available.

This case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, serving as a stark reminder to pet owners across Sunderland and beyond.
