KARL MCDONALD AND SHOCKING SEXUAL PESTERING IN NEWCASTLE AND SOUTH TYNESIDE
A teenage girl was left visibly shaken and deeply distressed after she became the target of persistent and increasingly sinister harassment by Karl McDonald, a 44-year-old man from South Shields, during her daily commute in Newcastle.For over a month, McDonald had been waiting at the Metro station near Newcastle to intercept the young girl as she disembarked from the train.
During these encounters, he repeatedly handed her cheap cannabis joints, which she took but then discarded, indicating her discomfort and unwillingness to engage with his advances.
However, the situation took a disturbing turn when McDonald produced a small yellow note and handed it to her, inscribing a lewd message that read: “quick s*** Friday morning, £100,” followed by his phone number.
This occurred in broad daylight and in a public setting, heightening the concern and alarm surrounding his actions.
The Newcastle Crown Court was told that the police became involved after the girl reported the incident.
An undercover officer was dispatched to South Tyneside the next morning, where he observed McDonald approach the teenage victim again at the same Metro station.
The officer was in plain clothes to avoid detection and was closely monitoring her movements.
When McDonald approached the girl, the officer intervened promptly and arrested him on the spot.
During the arrest, the officer found £100 in cash on McDonald, further confirming his intentions.
Prosecutor Rachel Glover explained to the court that McDonald appeared fully aware of the girl’s routine and specifically targeted her during her daily trips.
She stated, “The defendant was aware of her routine.
He attended the Metro station every day for over a month, at a time when he knew she would be arriving and supplied her cannabis.” The gathering evidence indicated that McDonald had been following her for an extended period, repeatedly showing predatory behavior.
Additional evidence revealed that a pack of unused post-it notes was recovered from McDonald’s residence on Sheridan Road, which still bore the impression of the note he had previously given the girl.
It was noted that the victim showed clear signs of distress and was described by witnesses as “visibly shaken,” particularly after the incident involving the note.
McDonald admitted to the police that he had approached the girl on multiple occasions and had given her cannabis.
However, he claimed that the note was meant as “just a joke,” attempting to downplay the severity of his actions.
Nonetheless, he pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and supplying cannabis.
The defendant, of Sheridan Road in South Shields, faced the court’s judgment with Judge Sarah Mallet handing down a sentence of four and a half years in prison.
Furthermore, McDonald will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life and must adhere to a sexual harm prevention order, restricting his future conduct to protect the community.
During the hearing, McDonald’s defense solicitor, Robin Turton, described his client’s behavior as “strange, intimidating, unwelcome, inappropriate, and criminal.” Mr.
Turton highlighted that McDonald maintained a stable employment record at the time of the offences and expressed remorse for his actions.
He acknowledged the damaging effect of his harassment, stating, “He is genuinely remorseful.
He appreciates now how intimidating and frightening his approaches must have been to her at the time.
He has no explanation why he did what he did.”
