August 2014 Horror novel writer jailed for molesting Bradford girl, four A DEPRAVED horror writer has been jailed for more than four years for sexually abusing a four-year-old Bradford girl while on police bail for hoarding child abuse images. Karl Jones, whose sexually explicit crime novels include Forbidden Desires and Dark Souls, Dark Deeds, molested the girl in the bathroom at her home She used a teddy bear to show the police how he pulled at her body “like he was going to tear her” after touching her indecently. Jones, 36, markets himself as “exploring the dark side of humanity” with his lurid tales of depravity. He was imprisoned for 49 months for sexually assaulting the child and possession of indecent images of children. West Yorkshire Police arrested Jones after the girl told her mother he had molested her and squeezed her tightly while she was on the toilet. He was on police bail at the time for hoarding child abuse images in the south of England. Prosecutor David Gordon said the girl’s mother had been concerned about the “sexual and fetishist stories” Jones published but learned to trust him. In September last year, Jones was sentenced to a three year community order for possession of indecent images of children Neither his probation officer nor the judge at Bournemouth Crown Court knew he was being investigated for abusing the girl in Bradford. Jones, of Belluton Road, Bristol, had hundreds of child abuse images on his laptop, computer disks and hard drives at addresses in Bournemouth and Kent. The police were alerted after he was told to leave his lodgings in Bournemouth by his landlady because she was concerned about his interest in her daughter. He left the disks behind and the child porn was discovered by the girl’s boyfriend, who was checking if Jones had taken photos of her. Mr Gordon said software on Jones’s seized computer allowed access to blocked internet sites and prevented any outside monitoring of its use. Jones told police officers he enjoyed looking at legal “Teen Model” sites. His barrister, Giles Bridge, said his client now accepted he liked viewing images of under-age girls but he would not be with his dying mother at the end of her life if he went to jail. Judge Jonathan Rose sentenced Jones to 43 months imprisonment for sexual assaulting the girl and six months to run consecutively for possession of indecent images of children. “You are a paedophilic criminal of sufficient baseness that condign punishment is needed,” the judge told him. He added: “You are devoid of any empathy for the child and unwilling to accept responsibility for your actions.” Jones must sign on the sex offenders’ register for life and the judge made an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order. July 2014 Convicted paedophile admits sexually abusing four-year-old Bradford girl A CONVICTED paedophile is facing the prospect of a long prison sentence after he admitted sexually abusing a four-year-old Bradford girl. Karl Jones failed to disclose to his probation officer in the south west of England that he was under investigation by West Yorkshire Police for molesting the girl when he appeared before Bournemouth Crown Court last year for downloading child abuse images, it was heard yesterday. He was spared custody by the judge who also did not know, Bradford Crown Court was told. Jones, 35, pleaded guilty yesterday, the day he was due to stand trial, to sexually assaulting the girl between January 31 and April 1, 2013. He had been sentenced in Bournemouth last September to a three year sex offender treatment programme in the community for possession of indecent photographs of a child. Judge Jonathan Rose said it was a troubling case and warned Jones that “a substantial prison sentence is not out of the question” for “this terrible offence against a small child”. Both a probation officer in Bristol and the sentencing judge at Bournemouth Crown Court had been misled, he said. Judge Rose adjourned sentencing until August 22, saying he wanted a new probation report to fully assess the risk Jones posed to children. He noted Jones’s guilty plea had spared his young victim the ordeal of having to give evidence and the fact the defendant had not committed any offences since and he had begun to engage with the sex offender treatment programme. Judge Rose told Jones: “This is a deeply troubling situation. The author of the probation report was unaware that you had been arrested for sexually assaulting a four-year-old child. “You were being investigated for indecent images offences when you committed this terrible offence against a small child.” In mitigation, Jones’s barrister, Giles Bridge, said his client had no previous history of offending of any kind. Judge Rose renewed Jones’s bail on condition he lives and sleeps every night at Belluton Road, Knowle, Bristol, and does not contact the victim or her family. He must sign on the sex offenders’ register and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order will be prepared for finalisation at the next hearing. September 2013 Child abuse images offender allowed to walk free by same judge who handed education official suspended sentence A JUDGE who gave a suspended sentence to an education official convicted of downloading indecent images of children has allowed another child porn offender to walk free. Judge Samuel Wiggs was criticised recently for giving a suspended sentence to former council officer Robert Ian Finlay, who downloaded 600 child abuse images. On Friday, he gave a three-year supervision order to another man who downloaded more than 500 indecent images of children. Karl Jones, 35, pleaded guilty to 20 counts of possessing still and moving images of categories 1-4, which were found on his hard drives on July 7 last year by the owners of the property in which he was staying. Judge Wiggs said a custodial sentence would not be in the interests of justice and imposed the three-year order along with a requirement that he attend a sexual offenders treatment programme for up to 60 days. Prosecuting, Stuart Ellacott told Bournemouth Crown Court that Jones, of Capstone Place, Bournemouth, had initially admitted downloading large amounts of adult ‘teen’ porn, which might have contained the indecent images. However, he later pleaded guilty to the charges. Mr Ellacott said police found software on his computer designed to make it difficult for the IP address to be traced by the authorities, and which would also allow him to circumvent blocks imposed by internet browsers. In mitigation, Nicholas Robinson said Jones was living in Bristol as a full-time carer for his 84-year-old mother, who has suspected lung cancer. He said: “Mr Jones clearly deserves to be punished – there are no excuses for this behaviour. “He is deemed to be of low risk of re-offending due to his previous good character, but a short prison sentence is too little to impact on his behaviour and minimised sense of responsibility. It might be appropriate to have a meaningful sentence in the community.” Judge Wiggs said: “You don’t need me to tell you the public are very concerned about cases of this nature. “In many cases it is necessary to impose a prison sentence. However they are relatively short at this level and the public interest would be better served by your having treatment and being supervised for a longer period.” Jones was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for seven years, and to submit any internet device to police on request for examination.
