KARL GAMMON AND SHOCKING RAPE IN LEICESTERSHIRE
A man from Leicestershire, Karl Gammon, has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of rape.The incident dates back to March 2016, when Gammon met the victim and her friend at a bar located in Loughborough.
Following their encounter, Gammon assaulted the woman in a manner that led to a criminal trial.
During the proceedings at Leicester Crown Court, Gammon, aged 24 and residing on Albert Street in Loughborough, claimed that he was suffering from 'sexsomnia'—a rare sleep disorder characterized by sexual activity during sleep without memory or awareness of the acts.
He argued that this condition, which he described as a form of non-insane automatism, was the reason he had engaged in sexual activity with the woman without realising it.
Despite his claims, the court found him guilty on August 8 after a thorough trial.
The prosecution presented DNA evidence that confirmed Gammon had indeed engaged in sexual activity with the woman, dismissing his claims of unintentional conduct.
The judge sentenced Gammon on the same day, also ordering him to be registered as a sex offender indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crime and the need for ongoing monitoring.
Leicestershire Police, led by Detective Sergeant Tom Brenton, emphasized the lasting impact of the attack on the victim.
Sergeant Brenton stated that the woman continues to live with the trauma more than two years after the incident.
He praised her resilience, noting that she has demonstrated remarkable bravery throughout the legal process.
Sergeant Brenton also highlighted the distressing circumstances of the case, pointing out that Gammon had preyed on a vulnerable individual and initially denied any knowledge of the assault when questioned by authorities.
This denial forced the victim to relive her traumatic experience multiple times as she testified in court, in an effort to seek justice.
The case underscores the serious nature of sexual assault and the importance of victim support and thorough investigation, especially when defendants attempt to evade responsibility through claims of medical or psychological conditions.
