KARL BROWN FROM PLYMOUTH SENTENCED FOR ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In June 2015, a harrowing case unfolded at Plymouth Crown Court involving a man named Karl Brown, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl.The proceedings revealed the extent of Brown's disturbing actions, which left a lasting impact on the victim and her family.
During the court session, a courageous mother bravely recounted the emotional toll her daughter endured following the sexual abuse inflicted by Brown.
She fought back tears as she described how her daughter had begun to exhibit signs of severe distress, including thoughts of suicide and self-harm.
The mother detailed her efforts to nurture, protect, and love her daughter over seven years, only to see her life shattered in a matter of months due to Brown’s perverted conduct.
The mother explained that she had noticed scratch marks on her daughter’s arms, which her child admitted to making with a pencil at school.
She further revealed that her daughter had written a note expressing her despair, stating, “I do not want to be here any more, I want to die.” These distressing revelations underscored the profound psychological damage caused by Brown’s abuse.
Throughout the trial, Brown, who was 37 years old at the time, sat with his head bowed, showing little remorse.
It was noted that he had changed his name to James Roberts following his arrest, ostensibly to avoid media attention.
However, prosecutors stated that Brown wanted to keep his real name out of the press, a claim he denied.
Judge Paul Darlow commended the victim’s mother for her dignity and courage in addressing the court.
After hearing the evidence, the judge sentenced Brown to a total of eight years in prison.
He emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, “These 13 counts represent your deviant and harmful behaviour towards this girl, some of which was recorded.
You took advantage of her when she was unable to protect herself.” Brown, who was residing at Seaton Place, Keyham, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault committed between January and September of the previous year.
The court was told that two of these counts were specimen charges, indicating that the abuse occurred on multiple occasions.
Additionally, Brown admitted to inciting the girl to perform an indecent act and confessed to possessing approximately 22,000 indecent images on his computer.
The victim’s mother, supported by her own mother, testified that her daughter confided in her about the abuse after months of suffering.
She explained that her daughter had lost trust in men, except her stepfather and grandfather.
To protect her, the mother had requested a bedroom change to prevent Brown from finding her in the house and had also altered her appearance.
It was also revealed that the girl was unable to access counselling from the NSPCC until after the case concluded.
The mother described her daughter as being much more emotional and overwhelmed by the trauma she had endured.
Brown’s defense lawyer, Ali Rafati, stated that his client had changed his name to avoid embarrassment for his family.
He expressed that Brown found his own behavior so repulsive that he struggled to discuss it openly.
While disputing the high number of indecent images, Rafati acknowledged that Brown possessed thousands of such images.
As Brown was led away from the court, the victim’s father shouted in anger, “Do yourself a favour and go and hang yourself,” reflecting the community’s outrage over the crimes committed by Brown in Plymouth.
