JULIAN DANSKIN'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN FIFE AND LEVEN: FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN AND LAWYER CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ABUSE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Fife and Leven, Julian Danskin, a prominent lawyer and former chairman of East Fife Football Club, faced a series of serious criminal charges related to the sexual abuse of young boys. The legal proceedings, which culminated in a conviction, revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that spanned over a decade, tarnishing the reputation of a man once regarded as a respected figure in both the legal and sporting worlds.

Danskin, who was also the captain of a Boys' Brigade company in Leven, was found guilty of multiple charges involving the molestation of boys aged between eight and 14. The offences took place during his tenure as a leader within the Boys' Brigade, a youth organization that is supposed to promote positive values and serve as a safe environment for children. The conviction was handed down in December 1999 at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, where Sheriff Francis Keane described Danskin’s conduct as “pernicious, loathsome and obscene,” emphasizing the betrayal of trust inherent in his position.

During the trial, it was revealed that Danskin had used threats and intimidation to silence his victims, who were subjected to his abuse over a period of ten years. The court heard that he had engaged in acts such as inducing the boys to strip naked, touching their private parts, showing them pornographic material, and in one case, encouraging a teenager to masturbate him. The evidence presented painted a picture of a man who, despite his role as a community leader and a figure of moral authority, engaged in degrading and criminal conduct.

At the time of his arrest and trial, Danskin was a senior partner at the law firm Smith & Grant and owned East Fife Football Club. He maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, claiming that the victims were “lying drug addicts,” and denied all charges. Nevertheless, the jury found him guilty of two counts of shameless indecency and one of lewd and libidinous practices. The court ordered that his name be entered on the sex offenders register for ten years, and upon his release from prison, he was to be supervised by social workers for a period of nine months.

Following his conviction, Danskin was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He was initially released after serving just one week, pending the outcome of his appeal. Outside the court, relatives of the victims expressed their relief and a sense that justice was being served, with some shouting “beast” as he was led from the dock. A spokeswoman for the victims’ families commented, “For our sons, it will take a long, long time before they can really move on with their lives because it is like a life sentence for them.”

In the aftermath of the case, community members and neighbors reflected on the impact of Danskin’s actions. Ann Ward, a neighbor from Leven, stated, “All the while that he was free, there was this great concern that there was no justice and that justice wasn’t going to be done. And I think what we have seen today will maybe restore some faith in the judicial system.”

Supporters of Danskin, including over 220 individuals who signed a petition, argued for leniency, suggesting community service as an alternative to imprisonment. His lawyer, Edward Targowski, QC, highlighted this support, saying, “It is in Mr Danskin’s credit that people are prepared to publicly sign a petition on his behalf.”

However, the verdict was met with mixed reactions. James Patterson, one of the victims, expressed relief that Danskin had been jailed but felt the sentence was insufficient, stating, “I think it’s great. Justice has been done, but I think it should have been longer than 18 months.” Anti-paedophile campaigners also responded, calling for tougher sentences and emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children from individuals in positions of trust. Dee Murray, spokeswoman for Justice for Children, remarked, “Paedophiles are attracted to clubs like the Boys’ Brigade and the Scouts because they have easy access to children. Parents should be vigilant and ask questions about who is working with their children.”

The Children First charity echoed these concerns, advocating for more rigorous background checks on individuals working with children and young adults. A spokesperson explained that many child abusers come from all walks of life, and current screening processes are insufficient. The Boys’ Brigade issued a statement expressing regret over Danskin’s actions, noting that he was highly regarded during his service and that his misconduct was a betrayal of the organization’s values. The Law Society of Scotland announced it would review the case before deciding on any disciplinary measures, while East Fife Football Club confirmed that Danskin had been replaced as chairman but declined to comment further on the court proceedings.
