DUMFRIES AND GLASGOW DOCTOR JU YOUNG UM CAUGHT SECRETLY FILMING 30 PEOPLE WITH HIDDEN CAMERAS

Ju Young Um, a 34-year-old medical professional from Dumfries and Glasgow, has been found guilty of a disturbing series of privacy invasions involving the covert filming of 30 individuals. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the local communities, revealed that Um used miniature cameras cleverly disguised as everyday household items, such as air fresheners and smoke alarms, to secretly record his victims in various settings.

These illicit recordings spanned a period from November 2020 to August 2023, during which time Um captured footage of colleagues, other medical staff, and individuals in private moments. The recordings included scenes of people in intimate situations, raising serious concerns about the extent of his invasive behavior. The trial took place at Glasgow Sheriff Court, where the jury concluded that Um’s motives were driven by a desire for sexual gratification rather than any mental health issues.

During proceedings, the prosecutor, Lauren Aitchison, pointed out that Um’s diagnosis of body dysmorphia was only established after his arrest, casting doubt on the sincerity of his claims of mental health struggles. The court heard that Um’s actions were premeditated, with the hidden cameras placed strategically in his flat to facilitate the surreptitious recordings.

A particularly distressing account was provided by one victim, who described the shock and sense of betrayal upon discovering that someone he trusted professionally had invaded his and his wife’s privacy. The victim expressed his feelings of disappointment and violation, stating, “Not only because it invaded my privacy but my now wife’s as well. I feel like I let her down letting this person into our lives.”

Despite denying any wrongdoing, Um was convicted of 23 breaches of the Sexual Offences Act. As a result, he has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register and is currently out on bail. His sentencing has been postponed until next month, leaving the community and victims awaiting further justice in this troubling case.
