JOSHUA POPE SHOCKS PLYMOUTH WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

A former secondary school teacher from Plymouth has been convicted of possessing and downloading a significant amount of indecent images and videos depicting children engaged in sexual acts, leading to a suspended prison sentence.

Joshua Pope, aged 26 and residing in Lancaster Gardens, appeared at Plymouth Magistrates' Court on June 11, where he pleaded guilty to three serious charges related to child exploitation material.

According to the prosecution, police received information linking a Dropbox account associated with Pope to a collection of images and videos of child sexual abuse.

On March 8, 2023, law enforcement officers executed a search at his residence.

During the raid, they confiscated multiple electronic devices, including an Apple iPhone, a second iPhone, a hard drive, and an Apple Mac Pro with a damaged screen.

These devices contained a disturbing cache of illicit material.

Investigators discovered that Pope had amassed a total of 276 images classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe and depraved level of child exploitation imagery.

Of these, 210 were moving images, indicating videos.

Additionally, there were 214 Category B images, with 127 being videos, and 296 Category C images, 25 of which were videos.

The evidence showed that these images and videos had been downloaded over several years, up until March 5, 2023.

During police interviews, Pope claimed that he had 'stumbled' upon the images by accident and had immediately deleted them.

However, he admitted that over the past two years, he had deliberately clicked on links that led to more indecent material involving children.

He insisted to officers that he had no sexual interest in children and that his actions were driven by boredom and loneliness, which had desensitized him to the material.

Pope also acknowledged that he had downloaded more disturbing content just a week before his arrest.

In a subsequent interview on November 30, 2023, after further investigation, Pope accepted that the images and videos found on his devices were indeed his, although he maintained that he did not believe he had stored them intentionally.

Nonetheless, he admitted their presence on his accounts.

The court was informed that Pope, aged 27 at the time of the hearing, had no prior convictions or cautions, and was considered to be of good character.

During mitigation, his legal representative, Ed Bailey, described the police visit as a 'wake-up call' for Pope.

Bailey explained that Pope’s obsession with searching for child abuse images had spiraled out of control, particularly during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated that Pope felt a sense of relief upon being caught, as it exposed his secret and allowed him to confront his shame, especially after his family discovered his actions.

Bailey emphasized that Pope had lost his job as a secondary school teacher, a position he valued highly, and had taken voluntary steps to address his behavior.

These included paying for six months of one-to-one therapy and engaging with organizations such as the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and Stop It Now, in an effort to understand and control his underlying urges.

While Pope denied having a sexual interest in children, Bailey acknowledged that this is a common feature among offenders of this nature and that Pope was actively working to change.

He also highlighted that Pope had recently secured new employment as a self-employed journalist and copywriter, seeking to rebuild his life.

Judge Peter Johnson addressed Pope directly, explaining the gravity of the images he possessed, including those depicting children being sexually penetrated.

The judge emphasized the importance of understanding the full extent of his actions, stating, 'You have been a party to the sexual abuse of children by creating the demand which leads to these children being abused.

It causes them long-term harm, not only physical for obvious reasons but also psychological.

It affects their mental health and their ability to form relationships.

In short, the damage is enduring and often permanent.' Judge Johnson further explained that any doubts Pope might have about the harm caused would be 'dispelled' through participation in a specialized rehabilitation program over the next two years.

Considering all factors, including the seriousness of the offense and Pope’s personal circumstances, the judge sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.

He also ordered Pope to be under supervision for two years, attend a 42-day accredited sex offender program, and undertake 15 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

Additionally, Pope was mandated to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

Furthermore, the court granted a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years, which would prohibit Pope from working with children or vulnerable adults in the future.

The Disclosure and Barring Service was also instructed to inform Pope of his barred status, ensuring he would be prevented from engaging in roles involving children.

The judge’s decision reflects the serious nature of the offense and the potential for rehabilitation, while also recognizing the need to protect the public from future harm.
