April 2012 Coach is jailed for abuse of two boys A former junior football coach has been jailed for nine years for grooming and sexually molesting two young boys. Bradford City fan Joshua Duffy, who appealed on the club’s message board in October 2009 for players for his new under tens Sunday League team called King’s Park Rangers, was yesterday sentenced for 18 offences. He was last week convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court of all the allegations against him and remanded in custody. Duffy, 23, of Ploughman’s Croft, Bolton, Bradford, took indecent photographs of one boy, aged ten to 13, after sexually abusing him. He twice attempted to rape his victim while he was his football coach, luring the boy with computer games and gifts. Joshua Duffy was yesterday afternoon convicted by a jury of a catalogue of sexual abuse against two youngsters he targeted over seven years. He was remanded in custody by the Recorder of Bradford, Judge James Stewart QC, to be sentenced on Wednesday. Duffy, 23, of Ploughman’s Croft, Bolton, Bradford, was found guilty of all 18 charges against him, including two of attempted rape, one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, six of sexual assault on a child, two of indecent assault and seven of making indecent photographs of a child. During the trial, the jury heard that he groomed one boy for sex, lavishing gifts on him. The child was aged ten to 13 at the time and Duffy was aged 19 to 21. They played football together and he went to Duffy’s house to play on the computer. Duffy, who ran a football team for boys under 12, committed sexual acts on the boy and took indecent photos of him. Prosecutor Nick Askins said the abuse came to light when staff at the boy’s school became concerned about over-affectionate texts from Duffy on his phone. Police seized his computer and recovered seven indecent images of the boy, naked or semi-naked. Mr Askins said Duffy had taken the photos on his mobile phone and transferred them to his computer. During the trial, Duffy blamed the boy, saying he took photos of himself flashing at the camera. The boy told his deputy headteacher Duffy had touched him indecently. The offences against the second boy then came to light. Duffy indecently touched him when he was aged between three and five and he was 14 or 15. He bought him gifts and allowed him to play on his games console. After the verdicts, Duffy’s barrister, Sophie Drake, said he was only a youth at the time his offending began Duffy was a chronic alcoholic from a very young age. He had now stopped drinking, despite the strain of the court case hanging over him. The judge will make a Sexual Offences Prevention Order to protect children from Duffy and he has already signed on the sex offenders’ register.
