READING MAN JOSEPH TURNER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES AND LIVE ABUSE IN PHILIPPINES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Reading, Joseph Turner, a 54-year-old resident of Tilehurst Road, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing indecent images of children, as well as actively commissioning live child sexual abuse in the Philippines. The case highlights the extent of Turner’s involvement in heinous online activities and his direct role in facilitating abuse across international borders.
Turner’s criminal activities came to light in September 2019 when police officers, acting on suspicions of illicit online behavior emanating from his address, conducted a thorough investigation.
During the search, authorities seized his computers and discovered a staggering collection of 878 indecent images, of which 363 were accessible files.
Among these, 123 images were classified as ‘category A,’ indicating the most explicit and severe content, depicting children as young as four years old being sexually abused by adult males.
Prosecutor Mr.
Carmichael emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “There was a large number of different images and different victims,” underscoring the widespread nature of Turner’s offending.
Further investigation revealed that Turner had made multiple payments via Western Union to the Philippines between 2009 and 2011, totaling over $1,000.
These transactions were not merely for personal use but were linked to his involvement in directing live sexual abuse of children in the Philippines.
Police uncovered messages that confirmed Turner’s active role in instructing young girls to perform sex acts on themselves and each other, as well as directing adult males to carry out sexual acts on children.
These payments and messages provided concrete evidence of Turner’s direct engagement in facilitating and commissioning child abuse across international borders.
The criminal activity was interrupted when a woman involved in facilitating the abuse attempted to blackmail Turner, leading to his arrest.
Turner’s actions were thoroughly examined in court, and he faced multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images and four counts of commissioning a child sex offence.
On Wednesday, March 16, at Reading Crown Court, His Honour Judge Burgess sentenced Turner to three years and four months in prison.
Additionally, Turner was handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which aims to prevent any future offending.
As part of his sentence, his computers will be confiscated and destroyed to prevent further misuse of his digital devices.
Turner’s conviction and sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such heinous crimes.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Reading, highlighting the global nature of child abuse and the need for continued vigilance and intervention.
