JOSEPH SWEENEY FROM BURNLEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN PRESTON
In July 2020, Joseph Sweeney, a man from Burnley, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after a series of disturbing offences involving the sexual exploitation of minors.The case, heard at Preston Crown Court, revealed a pattern of manipulative and predatory behavior that spanned several years and involved multiple victims.
According to court reports, Sweeney, aged 38 at the time, had repeatedly invited a 15-year-old boy to his home.
During these visits, he supplied alcohol to the teenager and pressured him into engaging in sexual acts.
The investigation uncovered that Sweeney had aggressively groomed this young victim, as well as two other boys online, encouraging them to send explicit photographs of themselves in the bath and shower.
These online communications demonstrated a disturbing pattern of grooming, abuse, and exploitation.
The police investigation was initiated after the father of one of the teenagers discovered messages on his son's phone, which led authorities to uncover a long list of victims.
Despite being under a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) imposed due to previous offences, Sweeney continued to communicate with teenage boys online, breaching the restrictions placed upon him.
This breach was part of a broader pattern of misconduct that included possession, creation, and distribution of indecent images of children, for which he had previously pleaded guilty in 2015.
During the court proceedings, Judge John Altham described Sweeney as a 'manipulative predator' who failed to recognize the gravity of his actions.
The judge emphasized Sweeney's poor criminal record, highlighting his serial offences related to indecent images and breaches of protective orders.
The most serious case involved a 15-year-old boy who was invited to Sweeney's residence on four separate occasions, where sexual activities took place.
The court detailed how Sweeney used messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook to contact the victim, who openly stated his age as 15, which Sweeney knowingly exploited.
The judge noted that the offending occurred between August and December 2019, during which Sweeney engaged in online grooming, pressuring the victim to send indecent photographs, and ultimately meeting him in person for sexual acts.
Sweeney also took and sent explicit photographs of himself masturbating in the bath to the teenagers.
The court described this as a 'sexual campaign' against the child, with alcohol being used during some of the meetings, further aggravating the severity of the offences.
In a disturbing revelation, it was also disclosed that Sweeney’s boyfriend was involved in some of the sexual encounters.
However, no charges were brought against him due to insufficient evidence of his awareness of the victim's age.
The court sentenced Sweeney to eight years and eight months in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence.
Judge Altham condemned Sweeney as an 'utterly incorrigible' and 'resourceful' sexual predator, emphasizing that his history of offending and breaches of protective orders demonstrated he could not be controlled within the community.
Judge Altham expressed concern that unless Sweeney was kept behind bars for a lengthy period, he would likely offend again and cause serious harm.
The court's decision reflected the need to protect the public from such a dangerous individual, especially given his repeated pattern of offending despite previous interventions.
Additionally, Sweeney's criminal history includes a 2015 conviction for possessing, making, and distributing indecent images of children.
After his release, he continued to re-offend, as evidenced by a separate incident where he downloaded and distributed child abuse videos.
This breach of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) led to his being remanded in custody and sentenced at Preston Crown Court.
