JOSEPH MCCAULEY SENTENCED IN BELFAST FOR ONLINE SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILDREN

Joseph McCauley, a convicted sex offender with a troubling criminal history, has been sentenced to a term of 19 months in prison following a disturbing incident involving an attempt to expose a child to explicit material. The court proceedings revealed that on May 6, 2020, McCauley's actions came to light after the mother of a 10-year-old girl discovered inappropriate messages on her daughter's Instagram account. These messages were traced back to McCauley, who was appearing via a video link from HMP Maghaberry, with his address listed as unknown.

According to the court, McCauley had sent a video depicting an adult male’s genitals to the young girl, an act that was intercepted by her mother before any harm could be done. The mother’s quick response involved contacting the police, who then began an investigation into the matter. The messages exchanged between McCauley and the girl indicated that this was not an isolated incident; there was a pattern of communication involving explicit content.

Law enforcement officials traced the messages to McCauley's mobile phone, leading to a search of his residence. During questioning, McCauley initially denied any involvement in the offense. However, he later pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to cause a child to view an obscene image.
