JOSEPH LENNARD AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN GATESHEAD AND LOW FELL
Joseph Lennard, an 82-year-old resident of sheltered accommodation in Low Fell, Gateshead, was caught in a sting operation orchestrated by paedophile hunting group Dark Justice. The investigation uncovered disturbing online communications in which Lennard engaged in what has been described as 'disgusting' conversations.
According to court reports, Lennard initiated contact by creating a fictitious online profile under the name 'Wendy13F.' This profile was intended to appear as that of a teenage girl, specifically claiming to be 13 years old.
Lennard’s target was an undercover decoy account that he believed belonged to a young girl named Amy.
Unbeknownst to Lennard, the profile was managed by Dark Justice, a group dedicated to catching individuals attempting to engage in illegal sexual activities with minors.
The court heard that over a span of three weeks, Lennard exchanged numerous messages with the decoy profile.
Although many of his messages were relatively benign, he crossed serious boundaries by discussing sexual acts and even sending a graphic image of male genitalia.
During the course of the exchanges, Lennard, who initially concealed his real identity and lied about his age, believed he was communicating with a girl aged around 13 or recently turned 14.
His conversations included explicit topics, which alarmed authorities.
Further disturbing revelations emerged during the legal proceedings; Lennard boasted about a history of illicit activities, claiming that as a lorry driver, he had imported illegal immigrants and suggesting he had committed a sexual offence involving a six-year-old girl in India.
Court documents also indicated that Lennard implied he had previously engaged in sexual activities with children and described his involvement in such acts.
The police found evidence of this in the form of extreme pornography involving bestiality stored on his computer, which was described during the hearing as 'depraved' and indicative of 'disturbing appetites.' Lennard, a resident of Low Fell in Gateshead, pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and possessing extreme pornography.
Judge Julie Clemitson presided over the case and remarked on the nature of the profile 'Wendy13F.' She highlighted that the profile suggested it was that of a 13-year-old girl, but the biography attached described an adult woman aged 31.
The judge questioned Lennard’s motives, noting that his choice to present himself as a minor was unclear but suggested it indicated an interest in meeting young girls while concealing his true identity.
The online conversations transitioned from Meet4u to WhatsApp, accumulating multiple pages of communications.
Judge Clemitson emphasized that, although some exchange was innocent, other parts of the dialogue were 'stomach-churning.' She condemned Lennard’s explicit discussions about exploiting children abroad and his claims of having had sex with a six-year-old girl—whether true or fabricated, the fact that he fantasized about such acts and discussed them with a decoy posing as a child was profoundly disturbing.
The conversations also included discussions of nurses potentially molesting him in a hospital setting.
Further sentencing details revealed that the found footage of bestiality on his computer was extremely depraved, leading the judge to describe Lennard as having 'disturbing appetites.' As a result, he was sentenced to a three-year community order, ordered to sign the sex offenders register, and was subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
During the hearing, it was also revealed that Lennard felt so ashamed of his actions and conviction that he was considering relocating from his sheltered accommodation.
His defense attorney, Vic Laffey, acknowledged that Lennard had acted foolishly and inappropriately, explaining that the defendant is a socially isolated individual who has no contact with his children.
His estranged wife had passed away the previous year, and his children did not inform him of her death, further contributing to his loneliness.
Laffey emphasized that Lennard's health issues and isolation contributed to his exploration of social media, which unfortunately resulted in this unlawful conduct.
The court was told that Lennard recognizes the gravity of his actions and the damage to his reputation, lamenting the loss of his once-good character at the age of 82.
His shame and the irrevocable consequences of his misconduct weigh heavily on him.
