Spanish ex-professional footballer, 25, who came to Britain to work as a male nanny so he could abuse young boys is jailed for 11 years
Paedophile Jose Castellano-Gonzales, 25, from Tenerife, advertised himself as an au pair and used the glamour of his former career in Spain to attract families with football-mad sons.
A Devon family employed him in 2015 because they thought his experience in the sport would help him relate to their sons.
But Castellano-Gonzales went on to abuse four schoolboys.
He also sexually assaulted a fifth child when he was hired by a second family in Bedfordshire.
Some of the offences happened when he was playing Fifa computer games with the boys and put his hand inside their trousers or pyjamas.
Before moving to Britain he had worked in Italy but was sacked amid concerns about his behaviour towards his employers’ two sons.
The mother in Italy traced the family in Devon to alert them but by then it was too late.
Castellano-Gonzales denied 13 sex assaults – two involving penetration – involving five boys aged eight to 11 but was convicted by a jury at Exeter Crown Court.
The families of his victims wept as he was found guilty – and then gasped as he continued to protest his innocence yesterday.
Castellano-Gonzales, wearing a tracksuit, appeared without a lawyer because his family could no longer afford to pay for one.
Asked by Judge Geoffrey Mercer if he had anything to say before he was sentenced he replied: ‘Simply that I’m innocent.’
Judge Mercer told him: ‘You clearly have a sexual interest in young boys. To describe what you did as a breach of trust is a gross understatement.
‘The damage you have caused is untold and what you did has totally understandably had profound effects on whole families.’
The court heard that Castellano-Gonzales was ‘immature’ and ‘described by some as being almost childlike’.
He was a professional footballer for the B Team at Tenerife at a time when the A team were playing the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Castellano-Gonzales was emotionless as his interpreter told him he would serve 11 years in prison. He was told that he would have to serve a further year on licence.
He was also given a sexual harm prevention order barring him from interacting with boys under the age of 16.
When the details of the order were explained he asked the judge: ‘Is this order just for the UK?’

Ex-pro Spanish footballer sexually abused five young boys in his care
A former professional footballer faces jail for sexually abusing five boys after he came to Britain to work as a male nanny.
Jose Castellano-Gonzales, 25, used the glamour of his career in Spain to attract families with football-mad sons as he advertised through an au pair recruitment website.
A family from Exmouth in Devon picked him because they thought his experience in the sport would help him relate to their three sons.
He went on to abuse one of the boys and three of his school friends.
He also sexually assaulted a fifth child after he was hired by a different family in Bedfordshire.
Some of the offences happened when he was playing Fifa computer games with the boys and put his hand inside their trousers or pyjamas.
Before moving to Britain he had worked in Italy but been sacked because of concerns about his behaviour towards his employers’ two sons.
The mother in Italy traced the family in Devon to alert them but by then it was too late.
He had already moved on to his second British family, where he carried out the most serious assaults on an 11-year-old boy.
The lad was so confused and embarrassed the only way he could tell his mother was by leaving her a message on the Notes app on her iPhone.
It described the assaults in chilling detail with ended with “I’m like WTF” and three angry face emojis.
Castellano-Gonzales, who was known by the families as Josito Castellano, had been a professional footballer for the B team at Tenerife at a time when the A team were in the top division and playing Real Madrid and Barcelona.
He was forced to quit because of injury and applied to become an au pair, posting his CV on the international website aupairworld.com.
He claimed he chose to work with families with boys so he could play football and computer games but a jury at Exeter Crown Court decided he had much more sinister motives.
The families of some of the victims were in the public gallery and sobbed with relief as the pervert was convicted on all 13 counts.
Castellano, from Tenerife, was found guilty of two counts of assault by penetration and 11 counts of sexual assaults on five boys aged eight to 11.
Judge Geoffrey Mercer QC adjourned sentence until next week to allow detectives to compile impact statements from all the victims and their parents.
He said: “I need some time before deciding on the appropriate sentence, which will inevitably be a prison sentence.
“I need to think very carefully. This is an extremely unusual case.”
