BRYAN CORDY EXMOUTH AND DEVON PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Exmouth and Exeter, pensioner Bryan Cordy has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young girls. The proceedings took place at Exeter Crown Court, where Cordy, aged 72, appeared to face justice for his actions.Cordy arrived at the court carrying a large sports bag, a detail that drew attention as he awaited his sentencing. He had previously admitted to six sex offenses, which included four counts of indecent assault and two charges of gross indecency with a minor. These offenses involved two girls under the age of 16 and occurred during different incidents spanning the 1990s and early 2000s, when Cordy was residing in Devon. It was noted that he has since relocated to Weston-super-Mare.
The court heard that the abuse of one girl began when she was just five years old, with Cordy engaging in inappropriate conduct on multiple occasions over several years. The second victim was subjected to similar abuse, with incidents occurring around three or four times while she was under 16. Prosecutor Ann Hampshire detailed the devastating impact on the victims, stating that the first girl would cry herself to sleep at night, feeling unable to confide in anyone out of fear that she would not be believed. The trauma left her suffering from panic attacks and a diminished sense of confidence, and she now requires ongoing counseling.
Following the allegations, police launched an investigation into Cordy’s behavior, which ultimately led to his arrest and prosecution. Hampshire also described the second victim’s response, revealing that she had tried to suppress her memories of the abuse in an effort to move on with her life.
During the court proceedings, defense counsel Alison Scott-Jones highlighted that Cordy had no prior criminal record. She expressed that he had shown genuine remorse and regret throughout the legal process, emphasizing that he accepted full responsibility without attempting to shift blame—an uncommon stance in such cases. Judge Jeremy Griggs acknowledged Cordy’s early guilty plea and decided to reduce the sentence accordingly.
As part of his sentence, Bryan Cordy will be required to register as a sex offender for life, and he will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order until further notice. Additionally, he has been banned from working with children indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community of Exmouth and beyond.
