May 2016 Sex shame Elgin Academy PE teacher struck off A PE teacher has been struck off after committing sexual offences on a 15 year old pupil. Jonathan Wylie was called before the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) after being convicted last year of numerous offences. Whilst “in a position of trust” at Elgin Academy in Moray a court found that Wylie engaged in sexual activity with a 15 year-old girl – asking her for indecent pictures and saying he wanted to kiss her. He was also convicted of being involved in the production of “indecent” images of a child. Wylie was jailed last year for two years and placed on the sex offender’s register for a decade for the offences. And now he has been barred from working in the classroom by the GTCS. The secondary school teacher did not appear to defend himself, but instead signed a “removal with consent order” last Tuesday. That means he has agreed to a ban from the classroom without submitting himself to a formal hearing from the teaching watchdog. Documents made public by the GTCS read: “The respondent indicated to GTCS that he wished to be removed from the register in view of the allegations made against him relating to his fitness to teach.” By signing the “reprimand with consent order” he waived his right to a full hearing. The offences occurred between September and November 2013. December 2015 Pervert PE teacher jailed for child sex offences A FORMER Moray PE teacher has been sentenced to two years in jail. Jonathan Wylie, who used to work at Elgin Academy, was found guilty by a jury in October of engaging in sexual activity with an underage pupil. He was sentenced today (Monday) in Elgin Sheriff Court, following the three-day trial. Wylie (33) was found guilty of asking the girl to send him an indecent image of herself, and indicating that he wanted her to perform sexual acts. The jury also found him guilty of intentionally sending written sexual communications to the same pupil, asking her to supply explicit photographs. He was convicted of a third charge of taking, or permitting the taking of, indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs, of a child. All three offences took place at an address in Moray between September 25 and November 14, 2013. The father-of-two, who lived in Elgin but has since moved to Ross-shire, was suspended from his teaching role after the allegations against him emerged in 2013. As well as handing Wylie a 24-month prison sentence, Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov also placed him on the sex offender registry for 10 years. Wylie will also be on licence for two years after his custodial sentence ends. Sheriff Pasportnikov described his crimes as “despicable”. A Moray Council spokesman said today that the local authority has “robust child protection measures” and staff at Elgin Academy “acted swiftly to implement these once a pupils came forward with concerns”. He added: “These procedures are there to provide pupils with the confidence to come forward, as the speed with which this was dealt with demonstrates. “Wylie was immediately suspended from his post once the allegations were made and dismissed when he was found guilty by the court.” November 2015 Elgin Academy teacher asked pupil to send him explicit pictures of herself A predatory PE teacher has been found guilty of asking a pupil at a Moray school to send him explicit photographs of herself. Jonathan Wylie held his head in his hands yesterday as a jury at Elgin Sheriff Court convicted him of three charges involving the same teenager. The 33-year-old had been suspended from his post at Elgin Academy since a series of allegations were made against him in 2013. Wylie was arrested after sending a string of Facebook messages to the girl between September-November 2013. He was convicted of engaging in sexual activity with, or directed towards, a teenage pupil. He asked the girl to send him an indecent image of herself, and indicated that he wanted her to perform sexual acts. The jury also found him guilty of intentionally sending written sexual communications to the same pupil, asking her to supply explicit photographs. He was convicted of a third charge of taking, or permitting the taking of, indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs, of a child. During his trial at Elgin Sheriff Court it emerged that a police investigation into Wylie’s internet activity revealed online searches for girls aged as young as 12. A forensic analyst told the court he had visited sites with titles such as “best jailbait albums ever”. Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov placed Wylie on the sex offenders register and allowed him bail pending sentence. But she ordered him not approach any girl aged under unless he was accompanied by another person aged over 21. She also ruled the bail conditions would not prevent Wylie from contacting his young daughter. he is due to return to court for sentence on December 3. His counsel, advocate Bill Adam, pleaded with the sheriff to spare his client jail. The lawyer said: “My client is a first offender and has previously been of good behaviour. “He is a married man and a family man, with two young children. “A custodial sentence must be a consideration but given his previous good character and background circumstances, it’s not the only consideration for the court.” Sheriff Pasportnikov thanked members of the jury for their “time, trouble and consideration” during the trial. Wylie is originally from the Elgin area, but now lives at 4 Grant Crescent, Maryburgh, in Ross-shire. He had worked at Elgin Academy for three years, and has been on suspended pay from Moray Council for nearly two years. He was made acting principal teacher of PE at the school in March 2013.
