JONATHAN O’HANLON FROM TONBRIDGE FACES PRISON AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY IN PEMBERY

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Jonathan O’Hanlon, a man previously residing in Tonbridge, has been found guilty of possessing and creating a significant number of indecent images of children. The legal proceedings reveal a disturbing pattern of behavior that has persisted over many years, culminating in his recent arrest and subsequent sentencing.

On 14 May, authorities executed a search warrant at O’Hanlon’s residence in Tonbridge, where digital devices were confiscated for forensic analysis. The investigation uncovered an alarming collection of material: a total of 31,566 still images and 539 videos, graded across levels one to five in terms of severity. The sheer volume and disturbing nature of these images prompted a serious response from law enforcement officials.

O’Hanlon, aged 50, had a prior conviction for sexual offences in Sussex back in 1998. Following his release from prison, he took steps to conceal his identity by changing his name through a deed poll and relocating to Kent, specifically to Tonbridge. Despite his efforts to evade detection, the Kent Police child exploitation and investigation team continued their efforts, eventually executing a search warrant based on intelligence suggesting he was in possession of indecent images.

During the sentencing hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on 20 November, His Honour Judge Carroll addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of the case. He stated, “I regard this as a huge quantity of Level 4 and 5 images. I do not feel bound by the sentencing guidelines. There is also a huge quantity of Level 1, 2, and 3 images. Again, this takes it outside of the guidelines. Although, I take into consideration your pleas of guilty, you do have a previous relevant conviction.”

Detective Constable Jo Gordon from the child exploitation and investigation team expressed her concerns about O’Hanlon’s continued risk to children. She remarked, “O’Hanlon has demonstrated that he continues to be a risk to children. Having been imprisoned before, he continued to view pictures of children being abused. This demonstrates a total lack of understanding that these pictures are real children suffering some of the worst abuse imaginable. My colleagues and I will continue to work hard to track down and bring to justice all those who seek to use the internet to sexually exploit children.”

As a result of his conviction, O’Hanlon was sentenced to three years in prison, with a two-year term to be served after a one-year reduction for his guilty plea. He will be released on license and will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order for ten years. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the same period.

In a related incident from October 2012, O’Hanlon, then known as Jeffrey John Barry, was convicted of possessing indecent photographs and gross indecency with a five-year-old girl. He was sentenced to nine months in prison following that conviction. It was during this period that he changed his name, attempting to escape his past. The police confirmed that after serving his sentence, he was no longer under their control, as sex offenders do not automatically remain on the register for life, and he was not required to report to authorities during that time.

Further investigations revealed that O’Hanlon had moved to a new address in Tonbridge High Street since his arrest. Recently, he appeared at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court facing 12 new charges related to making and possessing indecent images, with an additional five offences being considered. Prosecutor Jenny Yale explained that officers had tracked his online activities through a specialized anti-paedophile unit, leading to the raid. She stated, “He told officers he had become more interested in indecent images while in prison. Upon his release, he downloaded software he had learned about.”

Evidence showed that O’Hanlon stored images in a folder labeled “kids” and made them available for sharing online. The court heard that he requested a sexual offences prevention order and the forfeiture of his computer equipment. However, due to the severity and volume of the images involved, the chairman of the bench, Adrian Atmore, indicated that the court lacked the authority to impose a sentence at that moment. O’Hanlon was granted bail and will return to court for sentencing at a higher court, with conditions including avoiding contact with minors, not residing at addresses with under-16s, and restrictions on internet use outside of work or library settings. The sentencing date remains to be scheduled, but the case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation.
