JONATHAN KEY FROM NEWARK SENTENCED FOR GROOMING SCHOOLGIRL IN SHOCKING CRIME

In October 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Jonathan Key, a former security guard based in Newark, who was convicted of grooming a 15-year-old girl. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the offenses and the betrayal of trust involved.

Key was sentenced to a term of 27 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to serious charges related to his inappropriate conduct with the young girl. Initially, he had denied any relationship with her, attempting to dismiss the allegations. However, evidence presented during the proceedings painted a different picture, revealing a pattern of explicit communication and inappropriate behavior.

Mrs. Hardy, a prosecutor involved in the case, emphasized the severity of the evidence, stating, “The text messages [between them] paint a different picture of that relationship. They more than demonstrated there was a relationship between the two. The texts were very explicit, the vast majority of which were from him to her.” The messages, which were described as explicit and numerous, clearly indicated a grooming process and an inappropriate relationship.

Jonathan Key, who was 23 at the time of the offenses, faced charges of sexual activity with a child, including at least five instances involving penetration with his penis. He initially denied the allegations but changed his plea to guilty on the day he was scheduled to stand trial. This change of plea was a significant development in the case, reflecting the strength of the evidence against him.

During the trial, defense lawyer Mr. Simon Blakebrough argued that the age difference between Key and the victim was not substantial, stating, “This is not a 40 or 50-year-old man with a very young child. He was 23 at the time with no previous convictions.” Blakebrough also highlighted that Key had been placed on the sex offenders’ register and had lost his reputation and employment as a consequence of his actions.

In delivering the sentence, Recorder Mr. Peter Cooke underscored the importance of the law protecting minors. He remarked, “The law prohibiting sexual activity with people under 16 is there to protect people of that age bracket. It is there to protect them not just from predatory older people, and I don’t regard you as a predator, but it’s there to protect vulnerable young people and the harm they can suffer.”

Mr. Cooke further emphasized that Key had prioritized his own sexual gratification over the potential harm to his victim and had knowingly broken the law. “You’re not an ongoing menace to children or young people but you are someone who must pay for what has happened in the past,” he concluded, highlighting the importance of accountability and the legal consequences of such misconduct.
