JONATHAN HALPIN FROM SHIPLEY JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN BRADFORD
In a case that has shocked the local community of Shipley, Jonathan Halpin, a 27-year-old man, was sentenced to a year in prison after admitting to engaging in a sexual relationship with a girl who was only 14 years old at the time. The incident, which took place several years ago, was brought to light after the victim came forward to the police in 2015, revealing the details of her relationship with Halpin.Halpin, who resided on Crag Road in Windhill, Shipley, appeared before Bradford Crown Court to face the charges. During the hearing, he pleaded guilty to two counts of having sexual relations with the underage girl in 2010, when he was 20 years old. The court was told that the girl, whose identity remains protected, had initially met Halpin through social media platform Facebook. Their communication led to her visiting his home, where they engaged in sexual activity on three separate occasions.
Prosecutor Stephen Wood explained that the relationship was kept secret until the girl’s mother discovered it, leading to its termination. The girl described Halpin as being possessive and jealous, and she expressed feeling harassed by his behavior. She also stated that she felt exploited, emphasizing that she had never engaged in sexual activity before her relationship with Halpin began.
Judge Jonathan Rose, presiding over the case, acknowledged that Halpin had developed an emotional attachment to the girl, who was underage at the time. Despite this, the judge emphasized the importance of setting a strong legal precedent to deter other young men from believing that the age of consent is irrelevant or unimportant. In his sentencing remarks, Judge Rose highlighted the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect minors from exploitation.
As part of his punishment, Halpin was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order, which explicitly prohibit him from making any contact with the victim in the future. The case serves as a stark reminder of the legal and moral responsibilities surrounding sexual conduct with minors and the ongoing efforts to safeguard vulnerable young people in the community of Shipley and beyond.
