PONTYPOOL MAN JONATHAN DAVID BLAKE SENTENCED FOR 921 INDECENT IMAGES OF YOUNG GIRLS

In a serious case that has shocked the community of Pontypool, Jonathan David Blake, a 41-year-old resident of Graig View Terrace, Talywain, was brought before Cardiff Crown Court to face charges related to the possession of a significant number of indecent images involving young girls. The court proceedings revealed that Blake had accumulated a total of 921 photographs depicting minors aged between nine and twelve years old, a discovery that has raised grave concerns about child exploitation and online safety.

Blake appeared in court yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing indecent images. His legal situation was further complicated by his prior detention, having already served 158 days in custody before the sentencing. The court was informed that Blake was arrested on July 22 of the previous year, initially suspected of engaging in activities related to arranging and facilitating child sex offences. However, the more serious allegations in that regard were not pursued, and the focus remained on the possession of the images.

During the investigation, police seized a laptop and a computer from Blake’s residence, which contained the extensive collection of photographs. The images were categorized into different levels based on their content. Of particular concern were 725 images classified as level one, which depicted naked girls, along with 61 level two images, 27 level three images, and 108 level four images. The highest level included photographs involving girls and adults engaged in sexual acts, highlighting the severity of the material stored on Blake’s devices.

Prosecutor Helen Roddick explained that while some images were duplicates, the majority had been obtained through online chatrooms and downloaded from various websites. She added that Blake admitted to the offence upon arrest, stating, “I went through a bit of a phase, I was curious at the time,” which the court considered as part of his remorse.

Representing Blake, Andrew Morse argued that the 158 days already served in custody was an appropriate punishment for the offence. Nonetheless, Judge Neil Bidder expressed concerns about Blake’s attitude and his lack of full understanding of the harm caused by his actions. The judge emphasized that Blake had not yet addressed the underlying issues motivating his interest in such material.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Bidder stated, “You showed some appreciation in interview of how terrible the photos are and of the harm undoubtedly caused in taking them,” but he also noted, “It’s a matter of concern that you have not come to terms with your own motivation for liking images of young female children.”

As a result, Blake was handed a community order that will see him under supervision by the probation service for the next three years. He will also be required to participate in a sexual offenders treatment programme. Additionally, the court imposed a five-year ban preventing Blake from residing in the same household as any girl under the age of 18, aiming to protect minors from potential harm.
