JON RENTON FROM HAWICK SENTENCED AFTER BRUTAL ABUSE IN SCOTTISH BORDERS

A court in the Scottish Borders has heard harrowing details of a prolonged campaign of domestic abuse carried out by 33-year-old Jon Renton, a resident of Hawick. The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of violence, control, and emotional torment inflicted upon his partner over a span of nearly five years.

According to court reports, the abuse escalated from simple disagreements over household chores to physical assaults and coercive control. The incident that brought Renton before the court involved a seemingly trivial dispute over defrosting chicken. Renton asked his partner to prepare the chicken for a meal, but when he believed she had defrosted too many pieces, his reaction turned aggressive. He forcibly grabbed her by the hair, pulling her to the ground, which caused their Staffordshire bull terrier to become agitated. In a further act of violence, Renton pushed her face towards the dog, resulting in the animal biting her on the cheek.

During the court hearing, Renton’s solicitor, Ross Dow, acknowledged the incident but clarified that his client did not intend for the dog to bite her, stating, “He didn't hold (her) head down so the dog would bite her but.... accepts this is what happened.”

Beyond this specific incident, the court heard that Renton had exerted control over his partner’s life in numerous ways. He coerced her into attending a termination of pregnancy appointment, physically assaulted her in front of their children by striking her in the face, and exercised dominance over her finances and social interactions. These acts were part of a broader pattern of abuse that spanned from August 5th, 2018, to July 7th, 2023, at various addresses in Hawick and other locations within the Scottish Borders.

One particularly disturbing episode occurred during a shopping trip to Aldi in Galashiels. Renton became enraged when he believed his partner was speaking too loudly. He called her an embarrassment, then outside the store, pushed her against a car and struck her on the head, threatening, “I will give you something to cry about.”

Throughout the years, Renton’s abusive behavior included making offensive and derogatory remarks, throwing household items such as a high chair and kitchen utensils at his partner, and engaging in physical violence. His actions demonstrated a pattern of controlling and violent conduct that deeply affected his partner and their children.

Renton, who provided an address in Leitholm, Berwickshire, previously pleaded guilty to these acts, which a sheriff described as a “truly appalling course of conduct.” The court had deferred sentencing to consider background reports, including the fact that Renton has been diagnosed with a personality disorder. His solicitor also noted that he no longer consumes alcohol or cannabis, having previously self-medicated.

During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Peter Paterson expressed his immediate view that Renton should be imprisoned, citing the severity of his actions. However, the sheriff acknowledged the potential impact on Renton’s children, who rely on his financial support, and emphasized the importance of maintaining objectivity despite feelings of anger and revulsion.

Instead of jail, Renton was sentenced to a 12-month curfew, requiring him to remain at home between 7 pm and 6:30 am. He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work as an alternative to custody. Additionally, he is prohibited from approaching or contacting his victim for five years and has been ordered to pay her £2000 in compensation for the trauma inflicted.
