JON FOWKE FROM EDMONTON AND SANDOWN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD VICTIM

In December 2005, the case of Jon Fowke, a man with connections to Edmonton and Sandown, took a disturbing turn as he was convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. Despite his ongoing denials, Fowke, aged 59 and residing on Doncaster Road in Edmonton, London, was found guilty after an eight-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. The charges stemmed from a series of heinous acts committed against a vulnerable 13-year-old girl from the Isle of Wight, whom he had targeted over a period of approximately one month.

Fowke, a father of two and a former piano teacher, was accused of grooming the girl through a barrage of over 300 text messages and phone calls, establishing a manipulative relationship that culminated in the abduction of the young victim. The court heard that he took her to a secluded area within Parkhurst Forest, where he subjected her to sexual and indecent assaults. Although the jury acquitted him of the charge of rape, they found him guilty of the other serious offenses, including abducting the girl and engaging in sexual misconduct.

Following the verdict, Fowke was sentenced to a total of six years in prison. The court also imposed a lifelong ban on him working in any capacity that involves contact with children and ordered his registration on the sex offenders' register for life. Additionally, he was placed under a four-year extended license period after his release, meaning that if he reoffends within seven years of his release—potentially as early as three years from now—he could be recalled to serve the remainder of his sentence along with any new penalties.

Detective Constable Iain Robertson, who led the investigation, expressed relief that Fowke would be kept away from children for the foreseeable future. He praised the bravery of the young girl, who provided her testimony via video link after enduring two days of cross-examination. Robertson also highlighted the importance of cooperation with the Crown Prosecution Service, which facilitated the girl's testimony and provided expert witnesses to support the case.

The investigation revealed that Fowke first met the girl at a holiday camp on the mainland, where she was on a family vacation. The camp's records did not even list his name, raising concerns about the safety protocols in place at such venues. Robertson emphasized the need for criminal record checks for entertainers working with children to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Judge Derwin Hope acknowledged that the probation service had identified Fowke as a high risk of re-offending. However, Fowke's defense lawyer, Michael Selfe, argued that there was a significant gap of 13 years since his last offending behavior. He suggested that if Fowke were to offend again, he would be in his seventies, implying a reduced risk of recurrence. Nonetheless, the court's decision reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed and the ongoing concern for child safety.
