JOHNATHAN WETHERELL FROM FAVERSHAM AND MANSFIELD WOODHOUSE SENTENCED FOR 15-YEAR SEXUAL ABUSE CAMPAIGN
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Faversham and Mansfield Woodhouse, Johnathan Wetherell, a 53-year-old man, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of a prolonged and disturbing campaign of sexual abuse spanning over 15 years. The heinous acts involved four young girls whose ages ranged from four to twelve at the time of their victimization.Wetherell, who resided on Peafield Lane in Mansfield Woodhouse, was only brought to justice after a series of distressing revelations emerged. The case came to light when one of his victims, a young girl, began self-harming, a behavior that prompted her family and authorities to investigate further. Allison Cunningham, the prosecutor, explained to Lincoln Crown Court that the girl confided in her boyfriend about her self-injury, revealing that it was a direct result of the abuse she had endured at the hands of Wetherell. This disclosure set off a chain of events that ultimately led to four different girls coming forward with their own accounts of abuse.
According to Mrs. Cunningham, the oldest of Wetherell’s victims was assaulted while he was living in Faversham, Kent. The other three victims, who were younger, were attacked after Wetherell relocated to the King’s Lynn area. The prosecutor emphasized the profound and lasting impact the abuse has had on the victims’ lives, describing how their childhoods were irreparably damaged by Wetherell’s actions.
Wetherell admitted to a total of 11 charges of indecent assault and 12 charges of sexual assault on a child. The offenses spanned a period from 1993 to 2008, illustrating a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior over more than a decade. His guilty plea was seen as a sign of remorse, but the court was clear about the severity of his crimes.
Judge Michael Heath addressed Wetherell directly during sentencing, stating, “You are a danger. You represent a very high risk of serious harm to children. This offending took place over 15 years. It was done to satisfy your own perverted sexual desires.” The judge further explained that Wetherell had told a probation officer he was overwhelmed by an uncontrollable urge to touch children, which he could not resist. The judge highlighted the profound psychological and emotional damage inflicted upon the victims, describing the abuse as harrowing and emphasizing the incalculable harm caused.
As part of his sentence, Wetherell was also banned from having any unsupervised contact with young children, a measure aimed at protecting others from potential harm in the future. Ruth Paley, representing Wetherell, stated that her client had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had shown remorse for his actions. Despite this, the court underscored the seriousness of the crimes and the lasting impact on the victims’ lives.
