JOHN WEEDEN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN NEWCASTLE
A man identified as John Weeden has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after a lengthy legal process that followed his conviction for multiple sexual offences.Weeden, who was previously known by the name John Hawthorn and resides in Elswick, Newcastle, became the focus of police investigations in 2020 when a woman courageously came forward to report that he had sexually assaulted her on several occasions during her childhood.
The victim’s decision to speak out prompted an official investigation by Northumbria Police, leading to Weeden being charged with three separate sexual offences.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Weeden maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the crimes he was accused of.
However, after a trial where evidence was presented and examined, a jury of his peers found him guilty in July.
The case took a poignant turn during the sentencing hearing when the victim delivered a heartfelt statement.
She described the profound and lasting impact of Weeden’s actions on her life, emphasizing how the trauma had left her with deep-seated trust issues and ongoing emotional scars.
She stated, “The events have left a scar on me and changed me as a person.” Despite the pain, she expressed a sense of relief and hope for the future, saying, “I have finally got the justice I have waited for so long and I hope this man never gets the opportunity to ruin another child’s life, like he did to mine.” Following her emotional testimony, the presiding judge sentenced Weeden to ten years in prison, a decision that aims to serve justice for the victim and protect others from potential harm.
Detective Constable Lisa Herron, who is part of Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding department, commented on the case, expressing admiration for the victim’s bravery.
She said, “I really am in awe of the victim’s courage.
As a child, she was terrified into silence, and it took a lot of bravery for her to report and share the details of her abuse.
But thanks to her strength and resilience, she saw her attacker charged, convicted and now sentenced for his vile crimes.
I truly hope this sentence gives the survivor a sense of justice and comfort.” She also emphasized the importance of encouraging others who may have suffered similar abuse to come forward, stating, “I also hope that this shows others who have suffered non-recent abuse that it’s never too late for justice.
