WAKEFIELD MAN JAILED FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
A Wakefield man has been sentenced to 14 years in jail for serious sexual abuse offences dating back to the 1990s. John Wayne Poxon, aged 57, from Coniston Crescent, was convicted of 10 counts of indecent assault against a girl under the age of 14. His offences began when the victim was just four and six years old and continued for nearly five years for one of the victims. The abuse was described as degrading and humiliating, leaving the children terrified. Poxon's crimes date back to the 1990s, and he was found guilty in October. The sentencing took place at York Crown Court on November 28, where he received a 14-year prison term, consisting of 13 years' imprisonment plus a one-year extension. Detective Sergeant Matthew Brownridge of York CID commented on the case, stating that Poxon inflicted lasting trauma on his victims and denied the offences during police interviews, causing additional distress during the court proceedings. He praised the victims for their bravery and expressed hope that their courage would encourage others to come forward. The judge's sentence reflects the severity of his crimes, highlighting the ongoing impact on the victims' adult lives.
