JOHN WATERSON FROM HORRINGER FACES CHARGES OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN SUFFOLK
In August 2018, a serious case involving the creation and possession of indecent images of children came to light in Suffolk. John Waterson, a 47-year-old resident of Hazel Drive in Horringer, a village near Bury St Edmunds, appeared before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court to face charges related to the possession of a significant number of illicit images.Waterson pleaded guilty to the production of over 700 indecent images of children, with the youngest victims believed to be as young as eight or nine years old. The court was informed that his offenses included the creation of two images classified as Category A, which are considered the most severe due to their explicit and exploitative nature. Additionally, he admitted to possessing 49 images categorized as Category B, along with a total of 738 images falling under Category C.
The police investigation revealed that these images were discovered on multiple electronic devices found in Waterson’s possession. The authorities had uncovered the material while examining a backup of one of his computers, indicating that he had stored these illicit images across various devices, making the case more complex.
As part of the legal proceedings, Waterson has been required to register as a sex offender, a measure that will remain in effect as part of his ongoing legal obligations. His case is scheduled to return to court in September, where a decision will be made regarding the appropriate level of sentencing. The court will determine whether his case will be handled by a magistrates’ court or escalated to a crown court, which typically deals with more serious offenses and can impose harsher penalties.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Suffolk to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and swift legal action in protecting vulnerable victims.
